All these compatible?
1 x OCZ 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 CL 4-4-4-15 PLATINUM XTC
1 x Maxtor 500GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm *32MB Cache*
1 x Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2.20GHz Socket 775 800FSB 2MB Cache
1 x Asus P5B-VM Socket 775 I965G VGA onboard audio FSB1066 mATX

What power supply would you recommend for the above? I'll have 2 optical drives connected, plus various USB devices.

Are all the above compatible?

Everything is compatible there although some people might recommend that you change the hard drive from Maxtor. What uses are you intending to put the system to?

As for PSU, my recommendation depends on whether you also need a case or not. If you need a case then an Antec NSK6580 with the included 430w PSU would easily suffice. If you only need the PSU then something like a Corsair VX 450w would be a good choice.
 
Is there something wrong with Maxtor? I only went for it because of the price really. Would Seagate be any better?

It will be mainly used for Photo editing in PhotoShop CS#

I have a 550w PSU in my current PC, but is only 20 pin. I have read somewhere that you can use the 20 pin on the 24 pin boards??
 
Hard drives are very much based on personal preference so if you like Maxtor then go with it, lots of people don't though. Seagate are pretty good normally and in fact now own Maxtor so in theory there shouldn't be much difference.

You can use older style PSUs but you will probably need adapters to do so. It might be easier and more reliable to simply get a new one.
 
I have a Maxtor 80GB with 8MB Cache for running XP and it has not fallen over even after 18 months. Runs perfectly fine and still as fast as it was when new.

Its been a while since the take over of Maxtor by Seagate so you should in theory now have the Maxtor drives with Seagate Technology.

But as semi-pro waster says, its down to personal choice. Its the major pc enthusiasts that would try and steer you away from buying one.

Good spec also. A 'decent' model 450W PSU would be fine for that set-up. Even with overclocking the E4500 if you want to.
 
The Asus board you have has onboard video so it would not be as good an overclocker as one without onboard video.

Saying that, you should still get between 2.8Ghz and 3Ghz easily and maybe 3.2Ghz. It just depends on the overclocking ability of the Asus board.
 
Would it make a difference if i didnt use the onboard video?

3ghz would be nice :D even the 2.2ghz should be a nice upgrade from the P4 3ghz
 
If you disable the onboard video, the Northbridge should have more power to push the CPU up a bit more.

Give it a try and see :)

Keep an eye on the temp of the Northbridge though.
