OK, So I am having some trouble with my mums PC, it had XP on, and the internet stopped working one day, so since then, I have been trying to fix it. Installed a legit copy of vista, and the internet still doesn't work. It doesn't even connect to the modem.

Ran ipconfig /all to look, and its connecting, or at least trying to connect, using IP4 of 192.254.136.1 and that is weird. If I try and change the settings manually, it locks up, and if I tell windows to renew and get new IP data, it errors...

Any ideas lads? My mum needs this PC before weekend...

Personally I would have stuck with XP. :p

But hey, back on point:
When you say modem is she still on dial up?
or do you mean router?

I meant router, and yes, all other machines are connecting fine, but they are wireless, my PC is connect fine via ethernet, just her machine.

Sounds normal.
The IP you gave in the OP 192.254.136.1, are you sure it wasn't 169.254.136.1?
Which is something i'd expect If the PC couldn't get an IP from the router.

Just to start, I would turn off all PCs connected to the router, wired and wireless, grab another cat5 cable and swap it out turn on the PC and see if it gets an IP that way.

It is the second one you mentioned. The router doesn't even say its connected.

yeah you get a 169.XXX.XXX.XXX ip when you can't get one from the dchp server, in this case your router. Basically the PC gives itself one.

If the pc now has vista, go into control pannel, network and sharing center.

Click view status.
It should say connected. If it isn't then then cable is either not plugged in, faulty, or the port in the router or PC is faulty.

i had exactly this problem, i reflashed the router with the most up to date software, installed windows 7 on the problematic laptop and never had a problem again :)

his op says it locks up when he does this.

Does device manager show any problems with anything?

Device manager shows everything normal. This is the 3rd time I have installed vista.

If only I could reflash the Sky router...

Ah you have a slightly older router than me then.

I'd probably say that you have a faulty network port then.
Before you buy a new one you could try looking for updated drivers just incase.
