Hi Guys,

Just having a problem with my PS3 and thought it might be better to post here. Basically tried a couple of DVDS which are brand new and know they work as they play on my PC, but on the PS3 my connected monitor (2407WFP via DVI-HDMI @ 1080p) the monitor just goes into standby and Im not sure if the PS3 is actually playing them (pretty sure I get no sound)...

To get back into the PS3 Im forced to switch it off from the front and switch it back on. Is it something to do with my connected monitor (the same I use for PC DVD playback) or the connection?

Blu-rays are fine as normal...

LOL at that ironic smile :p

Gawd thats gonna take a while backing up and everything :p. Must have 150Gb+ of stuff...

Thanks mate - makes sense and didnt even think of doing it...

Backing up now - 2hrs to go :p

Dont think I need to back up anything other than my Trophies IIRC - wont game saves (including PS1/2) be done automatically?...

P.S. I had to do this recently when I moved to the 320Gb HDD - does that mean its just a bug when you reinstall the backup that causes the issues? Hoping you dont mean format and just start from there without reinstalling

EDIT - If it doesnt looks like I might have to get it fixed :( - read last post
EDIT2: Still on 1%

Gutted - its on 9% and now says 18hrs 47mins

Does a System Restore really take that long with a full HD format?!?

Thats mad :(

Hi Guys,

18hrs later - and it still doesnt work :(. Put in the DVD, tell it to play and 10secs later my monitor goes into Power Save :(...

Thought Id try it after the PS3 System Restore but before I restored my own data. So all the settings are default and Ive touched nothing except set it up so Video goes through HDMI and Audio via Optical.

PS3 Firmware is 2.52 so dno if I need to update that. Any further suggestions before I call up Sony? Bit worried as its a 2nd hand 60Gb and probably out of warranty - cant afford a new one atm...

I could use it without DVD playback I suppose, but I dont really want to...

Happened to me!
Do a system format:)

It is a software issue.
Sorry to sound like an idiot but you did mean PS3 System Restore and not something else?!?

I would say check the display settings haven't enabled 24p display as that could affect it. Also try changing the display resolution to something like 720p just to see if it still goes off. I bet it's just a setting that the monitor doesn't fully support that is specific to DVD (like upscaling settings).

OK I got it working :D - wasnt the PS3, but the monitor (I think)...

Ended up having to do some testing with the cabling, but found that it worked fine using the standard AV composite cable, so re-tried the DVI-HDMI cable but at each of the resolution settings, where my monitor refused to work under 1080i at all.

So my educated guess is that for some reason it must have been something to do with the automatic HDMI settings where it ticks everything below the max resolution. Making it custom and unticking 1080i just works...

In the middle of restoring my backup now - will try and see if changing the options makes any difference. I know PS2 games worked fine and I did have PS2 smoothing/ PS2 upscaling on. I hate the fact I have to change resolution to play PS1 games though

Can anyone confirm if there is any setting for DVD upscaling on the PS3? I just noticed that even though the PS3 was setup for 1080p and Ive got my monitor on fill so it stretches to 1920x1200 my monitor was reporting the output as 1920x1080. When I put in a DVD my monitor is still stretching to 1920x1200 but is reporting the output resolution as 720x576. I thought upscaling actually improves the output resolution via the PS3 (to 720p or higher?!?)...

I swear I read the PS3 upscales DVDs...

P.S. It also means that the whole backup and restore was a waste of time :(:p

You can have a cookie, worked it out myself but thats pretty much the issue it seems - dont let the PS3 assume supported resolutions - just need to find out about DVD upscaling now...

Have you tried playing a PS2 game?

If that wont run either it may be in need of repair. :(
Thankfully thats been fine as its the main reason I got a 60Gb - only just played MGS2 a few days ago

Cheers for all the advice guys...
