Help putting together a video editing rig

This probably is the wrong forum to ask about video capture cards! Just putting it out there, in case anyone knows.

First you have to know the connections that your using from your player, used to use firewire with my cannon XL but with what your going to use ain't got a clue, would guess you would have S-video, or something like that Find out what the player uses that where you have to begin. Capture cards can be a pain the more universal the connection the better. try to avoid scart converters your get a picture but lose luminosity channel from the picture.

used to use premiere for capture but theres lots of softward that you can get to do it.

If your lucky it will be firewire and maybe your mobo might have it.

I decided to hold off a little. Obviously an intel i7 930 in an X58 motherboard is the way to go, especially as I could slot in a six-core chip at a much later date.

But the new AMD 890 motherboards offer the possibility of unlocking a Phenom 555 to four cores and still running it at 4GHz (based on a review of an Asus ASUS M4A89GTD Pro MB with Phenom 555; there were some sleep issues with the motherboard that led the reviewer to advise people hold off a month before purchasing the new platform), again with the possibility of slotting in a six-core chip at a later date. The cost saving of the existing setup over an Intel one is compelling.

Editing aside, I am still looking for real world benchmarks to see the difference between the two platforms over the course of capturing and encoding a half hour U-matic video tape and putting it onto DVD.

I think I am being a little unfair on Intel. I am noticing that a lot of people don't take into account that the i7 chips seem to allow you to overclock quite nicely with the stock cooler, whereas with the AMD you have to buy an after market cooler from the get go.
