I got a local retailer to build me a new desk top machine and i received it from hjim just before Christmas, i was unwell at the time and havent had a chance to look at my new system until today. It has windows 8.1 installed on it and its 64bit.
The motherboard is an Asus H81I-PLUS and i tried to connect to my router with no success. Spoke to the guy who told me that there was no wifi card with the board and that he had given me a wifi dongle so that i would be able to connect to bband.
i rang BT who were very helpful and tried the system etc but could not get me connected either their rep said that the wifi dongle wasnt showing up either and that i would need one of these to be able to go wireless. Every time we tried to plug in the wifi usb it kept coming up saying usb not recognised by system, i tried it in my laptop and it said that it could not install drivers, the usb is a Dynamode N one.

Here's the questions
Is their no wifi card or slot with this motherboard?
If not why could a wifi cared be installed on motherboard
if this is possible can you let me know what type of one etc i would need
why will this usb not work
is there a certain type of wifi usb dongle that i could buy and where from

Sorry for the long winded thread but i will be most grateful if someone can help me please.

I have hate for usb dongles.

Any of these will work for you. I would be aiming at 300mbps minimum, as wifi and broadband speeds are getting quicker and quicker!

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus PCE-N15 300Mbps 802.11B/G/N Wireless PCI-E Network Adapter £25.99
1 x TP-Link 300Mbps Wireless N PCI Express Adapter (TL-WN881ND) £16.99
Total : £52.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Sounds like your original USB drivers were failing to install. Could be because you are on 8.1 and it just doesn't like that. These things i spec'd should just plug and play without need for installing the drivers but if it doesn't, they should come with a CD anyway. Your motherboard only hase a single x16 slot, so if you use it for anything, you would need to look at other USB dongles or Ethernet connection via TP link home plugs or something. If not, these will fit into the x16 slot and work without issue.

They plug internally.

If you have a graphics card, i am afraid you will need other adapters, as that is where the graphics card would be.

Also have a huge hate for USB wifi dongles. Eugh. the amount of issues I've had using them they just live in a draw now for emergencies only.

Homeplug or PCI-e card (if you can fit one) is your best bet.

Well, the way i see it, not much point in investing on hardware that could be outdated within a few years when the newer ones are only little more expensive. Having said that 150Mbps will do just fine unless you are well into your downloading and have an extreme internet connection (as they cant actually deliver 150mbps or 300mbps, that is just the theoretical amount). My 300Mbps home plugs work at around 80-90Mbps when two rooms apart from each other, which is great as i only have 65Mbps broadband.

You need two of them, one by the router and one by the PC. You plug the router into it via ethernet and the PC into ti via ethernet. It essentially uses your electrical wiring to transmit the signal.

10 years ago, everyone had terrible internet but it was fine as standard webpages didnt have loads of video adverts and such. Now, you have two or three flashy video ad's coming up during normal web pages, who knows what sort of connections we will need for standard porn surfing five years from now ;).

Its cool, Virgin media seem to be preventing me from gaming more than 15mins while they are fixing a network fault via submarine (Surrey/Staines/Wrasbury area still heavily flooded).

Any more questions feel free to post back here or in the network sub-forum. Those guys know more on this stuff than i do but have had to deal with a few network problems myself over the years, so ill have a crack at it if you have any more issues.

Hi guys, sorry for bringing this old post up again but my health was bad there for quite a long while and I didn't get round to ordering one of the two suggestions given to me above. I was wondering if these were still applicable or is there newer versions of this that I should order instead.
Are they ok for windows 8.1 as well
yours
John
