Help required speccing up a file server.

god knows, i use it more as a media serverm files are downloaded direct to the box, my router died last week so im stuck with this crappy virmin one that only does 10/100, ill do some tests though.

Ok, transfer speeds moving a 1.3Gb file form my server to my main pc and vice versa was 80Mb/s, initial transfer rate was 140-160Mb/s but sharply drop and settled at 80. No doubt this is limited by the write speed of the hard drive.

nothing special - if anything they are poor as it was an untuned windows <-> linux transfer.

Just ensure that the disks both sides are fast enough ... Mine are mechanical so I think they're around the 100MB/s mark.

Set the packet size to be equivalent on both sides - mine are set to a modest 7000 MTU

As I said I haven't got into tuning it yet and the ION based machine shows potential as the cpu only hit 20%
