Hi all,

I am looking for some help with building a system from scratch for the first time. I will be using it for pretty basic tasks i.e. surfing the net, watching movies and doing work on it.

However, I would like a decent processor, amount of RAM, DVD drive, USB 3.0 slots and hard drive (although I do have an external 2TB hard drive - USB 3.0, which I could use). I will also need Windows for the system. I already have a monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers.

My budget is £500-£600. Thanks in advance for your help. :)

I went with a SSD, you can add more storage later if needed. You have a total of 5 USB3 ports, Option to add a GPU/ More ram later.

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Intel Core i5 DIY ATX Motherboard, CPU & RAM Bundle £340.98
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £77.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £62.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £49.99
1 x NZXT Source 210 Elite Midi Tower Case - Black £39.95
1 x Samsung SH-118BB/BEBE SATA 18x DVD-ROM (Black) - OEM £13.99
Total : £600.89 (includes shipping : £12.50).

As you're unlikely to be overclocking and haven't mentioned gaming you can save a bit on the motherboard and CPU. The spec above mine has the 'K' version of the processor which allows for overclocking but costs a little more as a result. If you fancy going that way don't forget to budget in a third party cooler as you won't be able to overclock far on the stock Intel offering.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4460 3.20GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £145.99
1 x Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5” 7mm SSD + 9.5mm Adapter (CT256MX100SSD1) £86.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £77.99
1 x Gigabyte B85M-D3H Intel B85 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard £56.99
1 x TeamGroup Elite Black 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (TPKD38G1600HC11DC01) £55.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £49.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM003) HDD £43.99
1 x BitFenix Neos ATX Tower Black/Black £29.99
1 x LG 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM GH24NSC0.AUAA10B £13.99
Total : £575.41 (includes shipping : £11.25).

The savings have allowed for an additional 1tb drive, a bigger 256gb SSD and change from your £600

Thanks both for replying. ExRayTed you're right I won't be gaming or overclocking, anytime soon, so I think I'm going to go with the second option. I'm glad I decided to post on here now, the help is very much appreciated.
