Hi, trying to sort a friends laptop out (win 7)

Will not boot at all.
Hard drive at times makes strange noises.

Have put the Hard drive (Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500gb 2.5inch sata)
into a external HD caddy and connected to my laptop.

Sometimes (rarely) it will get picked up and under my computer show 3 partitions.

One will be recovery partition
one the OS partition (C)
and the other one (D) for other data.

Not getting any joy being able to even open (C) to extract persons personnel data off of it.

Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated please.

Photo's on this hard drive are of great importance. (alas no back up)

Thank you guys

Download and run 'Recuva' from Piriform.
Adjust the settings (Options > Actions) to scan for non deleted files.
I use deep scan and ticking 'restore folder structure' helps too.
You can also change the number of passes on the general tab to 35.

Try get the data recovered when you're in bootable environment such as Hirens so that it isn't been seen/touched by Windows/AV software. Hirens has some built in good tools to recover the data, I quite like GetDataBack for NTFS and DiskGenius but Recuva will suffice as Ox mentioned above.

Happy to have a go for you if you fancy send it up to Yorkshire (I do it on a daily basis for the NHS)
