Help! Revs dropping and shuddering ?

This is probably a ridiculous question, but how can the revs drop off that sharply if the car is staying at a fairly constant speed ?

Surely the momentum of the car would keep the RPM at roughly the same speed and you would just feel a loss of power ? Unless of course you dipped the clutch...
 
Was it wet on the way to work but dry on the way home? Might be water getting into ignition components?

They can't, it's losing the rpm signal from the crank sensor, hence 0 rpm on the tach and no power. ECU can't work without an rpm signal.

The rpm gauge must be electrical and not gear driven.
It drops too fast - you would be through the windscreen or the car would stop dead.
Electrical problem ftw!
