Help - Second hand XBox 360 or new WiiU?

Looking around I can only see the Xbox Slim 250Gb with a single game (eg: Black Ops2) costing well over £200...?

ie: Only about £100 different to the WiiU.
There are loads of bundles around for the 250 GB 360. Quick look on ShopTo for instance, you can get the console with Forza 4, Dishonored and Skyrim for £200. Maybe not 10 year old friendly games but they have lots of packs and there may even be better deals out there.

To play online with the XBox do you have to subscribe to Live? And that's £30 a year?
Yeah it needs a subscription to play games via Xbox Live, although some console packs come with a one year subscription.

I'd say otherwise Flibby; You're talking about general household consoles, then surely the xbox is a better option? As it doubles up for a much better entertainment centre (the ps3 might even be better).
Didn't really think about using media on it, if it's going to be needed for media then yeah definitely 360.

Same package is at a supermarket (well Forza and Skyrim) £169 at the moment :)

OK, so that'll be £20-30 a year then!?

At the moment the kids tend to play more with real people sitting next to them. And the WiiU endorses that by giving them each a screen of course...

In this case I'd go Wii U.

Just for perspective I'm a bit of a collector so have a lot of consoles etc + gaming pc's in the house :

Myself, Mrs and sons (12,4,5) all played together in various configurations on the Wii U at the weekend and had a great laugh, a lot more fun than on the 360 in recent times, in my house at least - it's given a new dimension to gaming again.

Is that in Nintendo Land games? Are there plenty of 3-5 player games in there?

I've heard good reviews of that title!

Of the games I've got Nintendoland, Tank Tank Tank and NSMBU all support 3-5 players.

Nintendoland has the following games which would support 3-5 players :

Zelda Battlequest (edit - up to 4)
Pikmin Adventure
Metroid Blast
Mario Chase
Luigi's Ghost Mansion
Animal Crossing

Sort of, but as I said, only having owned a Wii before, I'm not sure if I'm missing out on any valid points?

My main concern would probably be the WiiU isn't going to succeed. eg: XBox360 games seemingly having better graphics/speed than the WiiU. But I suspect there's more power under the hood than we can currently see and it will take a year for developers to learn how to use it. And at the end of the day, it's not all about graphic quality.

Get a WiiU with Mario U. Your kids will love and so will their friends, it does stuff the 360 will never do, forget all the back catolog talk... 360 ain't got Mario has it?

WiiU is more about kids having a good time in the same room so it sounds ideal for you. You will be amazed too, as a bonus :)

Just noticed, you can play co-op with the XBox on games like Black Ops. OK, it's split screen, but from the videos I've watched, it's perfectly acceptable. Of course on the WiiU you can each have a screen, one person using the TV, and the other the GamePad. But is that worth £150 more?

Also, Forza 4!!! :)

So a comparison:-
To get what I'd want with the WiiU = ZombiU pack (£300 - Don't want ZombiU, just the Pro Controller) + Nintendo Land (I'd want this with the WiiU - £40) + Black Ops 2 (£40) = £380!
To get what I'd want with XBox (250GB) = Forza 4/Skyrim bundle (£169) + Black Ops 2 (£40) + Controller (£21) = £230! And the kids can still play classic Wii games on the Wii!

Given the investment in an XBox is only a couple of hundred (instead of approaching £400), and it's a solid known quantity with a huge back catalog, I'm tempted to go down that route, if I can indeed get one for a nice low price. We'll then keep the Wii for nice family orientated games... So from starting thinking the WiiU made most sense... I've done a u-turn... As nice as the GamePad is, it seems a nice frill, rather than a game changer for me. Maybe in a year or two my opinion might change...

wiiu will be a flop like the wii was..

only crap games from devs looking for easy money and barely any AAA titles

btw if you have a 3dtv it might be able to be awesome on splitscreen

Hardly call the Wii a flop! It's a great console (for what it is)!

That 3Dtv thing looks impressive! Is that a regularly supoprted feature of the XBox?

That said, if you're playing co-op, with regular split screen it must be kinda useful to be able to easily see what your team mate is upto...

Get a 360 and pick up a load of points at the same time. The XBLA library alone justifies the console and the backlog can be picked up so cheaply it's a no brainer.

On the 360 accounts are set up seperate to the console. What I've done for my 8 year old is set up a child hotmail account to my main one and use that on her console. If you have a usb stick you can even set up his profile on that so he can take it to his mates houses etc.

Well, I've reserved a 360 at Morrissons. 250GB slim with Forza4+Skyrim for £169! Seemed too good an offer to ignore! The WiiU looks interesting, but it just felt like you were paying loads more for what could be considered frills. And I've got the feeling the XBox is still the superior work horse too!

Regarding accounts, is there just one, or can you set up multiple for different family members?

And as regards that 3D TV dual image example two posts up? Just need to find if my "active" Panasonic P46GT can handle it? I suspect not :(

Good deal.

You can have as many as you like and you can choose whether they'll be local or xbox live accounts.

In fact you can set them in advance if you like too: http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/

^^ Sorry if I'm asking dumb questions here...

1) So what is the significance of these accounts? ie: If my son has one and I have one, what do they actually do. Are they basically just your ID on the machine (and online)?

2) Do you have to have an XBox Live account to play online?

It's just like a profile, or a separate login on your PC for other people.

Yes, and a gold membership. The alternative is silver which allows you to use the online services (with some restrictions) but you can't play multi player games without gold. Or you can just set up a local account that doesn't use Xbox Live at all.

Yes they are called Gamertags and if you want to set them up (you have to for silver and gold memberships) then you set them for each individual that would be playing on the console. Game saves and achievements are then user specific. So you could both be working through Skyrim for example and with your own login you sign in and go back to your own game save etc.

Yes you need to have a Gold (paid) membership to play online. Silver lets you download demos and use some of the Live functionality.

^^ OK... The XBox Live Gold account would allow us to have 2 or more accounts/IDs?

Shame it's £30+ a year for that membership!
