Hi all,

I purchased a super cheap wii console on its own the other day. Ordered a new PSU, av cable + remote (long one, alread had the nunchuck). It boots up fine (even had a copy of wii sports in drive). However, I cant get the controller to respond to the ststem, I just did a search and it seems nintendo have a 'wii sensor bar', is there no senor built into console? Do I need a wii bar?

Thanks

Yes, you need the sensor bar, though all the official one does is take power from the console. Intrisically, it's 2 infra red LEDs that you stick above or below your telly to orientate the remote.

The official one is tethered to the console by a painfully short cable, so your best bet is to pick up one of the cheap (around a tenner) battery powered ones, that are usually better that the official one (they offer increased range). In the interim, you *can* improvise (badly) with a pair of candles, or I'm sure there are guides to fabricate your own if you're handy with a soldering iron :p

You need a Sensor Bar ... its what the remote looks for to tell it what to do on the screen. They're quite cheap afaik only about £5

It's an array of 10 LEDs actually, and it comes with a 3.5 metre cable.

Lol candles? taking the biscuit surely :D

Nope, I've seen it done. IIRC the IR sensor simply looks for two points of light above or below a rectangle of light and triangulates the on screen pointer position based on the three inputs. Whilst candles are not ideal, they will and *do* work, but really only in a low light situation :p

Duely corrected! Some friends of mine have an early console, and I'm sure they had real problems with the in pack sensor bar, to the point that they bought a cheapo battery operated one. Their Wii is just underneath the TV.
