First upgrade in 5 years, my last rig was great but showing its age so i dismantled and sold it.

This is what I'm thinking. Have been out of the scene for a year.

The issue I'm having is mostly with the board. I'm looking for something around the £250 - £330 mark. Here's what i have looked at.

Computer will be mostly used for gaming @1440p wanting to take more advantage of RTX games also. Will be overclocking the CPU to maybe 5.0Ghz (or more if the 13700K is capable?)

Board options
Asus TUF Gaming Z790-Plus D4 (LGA 1700) DDR5 ATX Motherboard
MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR5 (LGA 1700) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX (LGA 1700) DDR5 ATX Motherboard

CPU
Intel Core i7-13700K (Raptor Lake) Socket LGA1700 Processor - Retail

Memory
Corsair Vengeance RGB EXPO 32GB (2X16GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C36 5600MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black

Graphics Card
Asus GeForce RTX 4080 TUF OC 16GB GDDR6X PCI-Express Graphics Card

Drive
Samsung 990 PRO 2TB. Will partition this, 300gb for windows 10 or 11 and 1.5tb for games (usually 1.8tb is allocated in total) after the drive is installed.

Case
Corsair 5000D RGB

Cooler
H150I ICUE elite

PSU
Help me spec this please :) Something 1000W Platinum grade maybe?

So basically stuck with my Board and Power Supply options. Will be grateful for any advice.

I'm pretty sure the 13700K has an all-core clock that's higher than 5 Ghz already. They're all ragged to ruin out of the box nowadays. If you want more stock performance, I'd suggest faster RAM, though I personally wouldn't bother for 1440+ray tracing because that'll more often be GPU limited.

Thermaltake PF3 (platinum) 1050 is £190 at the moment.

The issue I'm having is mostly with the board.

What features do you need/care about and don't care about?

Suggested build changes, primarily to fit a 4090:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £2,538.82 (includes delivery: £11.98)

Cooler this (under £50).

Looks neat that Tetras, thanks.

With the board I won't need so much I/O at the rear, just something that's decent for overclocking and can accomadate front USB 3.2 and USB C. What's the difference between the B760 and Z790? I do prefere the 13700K also as that's an unlocked multiplier if I'm right?

Team group memory is good also, I had that on my last rig.

What's the difference between the B760 and Z790?

In short, B760 has less of everything, but the main thing you'd notice with the lower-end (in terms of price) board I suggested is it only has 2x M.2 slots, though higher-end boards tend to have 3.

Z790 also has PCI-E 5.0 graphics, which B760 usually does not.

You'd need to compare the specs between individual boards, because there are entry-level Z790 and high-end B760, so you can end up with more features, better sound, etc, even though in theory it should be a lesser chipset. For example: B760-F Strix has high-end sound, PCI-E 5.0 graphics and 3 M.2 slots,

I do prefer the 13700K also as that's an unlocked multiplier if I'm right?

Yes, but you need a Z board to overclock a CPU.

Thanks for the advice.

After spending some more time on this, the Zboard is more for me. I'm between these two now.

Asus ROG Strix Z790-H Gaming WIFI (LGA 1700) DDR5 ATX Motherboard

MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI (LGA 1700) DDR5 ATX Motherboard

The Asus at 16+1 power stages rated at 80A whereas the the MSI is 90A. For overclocking the difference will be negligible?

Unless it is something buildzoid has mentioned in one of the roundups, then I can't help you there I'm afraid (in terms of which boards perform better for overclocking).

Cheers, lastly I'm seeing doubt whilst looking around regarding power supplies. I believe a 1000W platinum grade PSU should easily power a 4080/4090 with some breathing space. Not that gaming will ever push the full power from both the 40 series card and 13700k I'd say.

Yeah, 1000 is fine. I'd stick to recent PSUs that are designed for the spikes, but there should be no issues.

Quite like the look of this one:

Phanteks Revolt 1200W ATX 3.0 PCIe 5.0 Modular 80 Plus Platinum Cable Free Power Supply - Black

Developed in conjunction with Seasonic. A bit more than what I require but within budget. I take it these are decent these ones?

Thanks again for your advice.

Edit. No cables lol

Hmm, yeah, bit pricey when the cables are included, strange decision by Phanteks that :o

If you want a platinum PSU, I'd look at the Thermaltake PF3 1050, currently £190.
