HELP!!!!....SSD install

Ok so bit the bullet and finally bought a SSD.
Samsung 840, 250Gig.

So removed old 1TB Spinpoint F3.

Changed BIOS settings to PCH SATA Control mode to AHCI

Installed new drive, windows 7 installed and runs up without problem.

Now when I try to re-connect my old drive to use as a data disk, system BSODs, tries to repair but fails. So I remove F3 and all is well again (I'm typing this from PC)

The F3 was in IDE mode when used in the machine previously. Any ideas???


I'm also seeing this which I will look into if I can get passed the problems getting HDD to work (same as this chap)

Hi ive recently installed a

Samsung 840 ssd into my

Win 7 64bit
Gigabyte P55A-UD5 {with latest Bios}

on boot up i get a black screen showing

** This version supports only Hard Disk and CDROM drives **
Please wait. This will take few seconds.


Any obvious errors/mistakes???

Ok I think I understand what youre telling me..

Because the F3 was originally formatted as Windows 7 (IDE Settings) it's tripping the BIOS up.

Now I already have Windows 7 up and running on new SSD. I'm not worried about losing data on the F3, Backed up all the data files about a couple of days back, so losing the data doesnt give me any problems.

So hopefuly simply reformatiing it with BIOS set to AHCI should do the trick??

What's the easiest way to simply reformat it as new??

If I've not understood please feel free to tell be I'm a dopey git..

Woah... What's a reg file? And how do you run one??

So let me see if I've followed you.
Disconnect ssd
Stick F3 back in.
Set bios back to ide
Run up drive and run that file (how you do that?)
Disconnect F3
Reset bios AHCI
Connect SSD and F3
Both should run up' hopefully???

Morning peeps, quick update for ya..

So up bright and early thought I'll reset bios to IDE and do the little reg update. So disconnect the SSD plug the F3 back in and set BIOS back to IDE. Still half asleep so missed bios screen and PC continues through and boots!!! (Settings are still AHCI) So quick brain wave and into device manager and scan for hardware changes... let it sort it self out and power off.

Right so I connect up SSD + HDD and as if by magic it's all run up from SSD and I can see F3 sitting there as drive E & F.. Not what I'd expected but it's up and running..

Both drives now show in device manager as SCSI devices. Is that as it should be?

Ok little update (only doing this in case someone else treads the same path)

Installed Samsung SSD magic that comes with the drive and it doesn't recognise the drive, though it does read it's info. So I swapped the SATA Ports I was using on Mobo.

I was plugged into GSATA2 06+07

I'm now in SATA2_0 + SATA_1. Again booted and scanned for new hardware. Now seems happier. Samsung software picks up drive straight away and both drives now show up in device manager as simply drives not SCSI devices.

Ran Samsung firmware update without problems..

I'm sure some reading this will think "what a numpty" but I only do this once in a blue moon so it's all new to me.
