please please please please please help me, i cannot tolerate how terrible this celeron is anymore, my PC is nothing but a sophisticated paperweight, i was on me PC and i got BSOD-ed, and to my utter disbelieve when i rebooted i got an error message as follows:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM this file is missing or corrupt, you may attempt to repair this file by pressing the 'r' key while in your windows startup screen, anyone have any idea whats happened? also when i go into BIOS and set to boot from disc, i insert my XP disc and get this when its loading the setup screen:

VGA.SYS is corrupt windows XP setup cannot continue, press any key to restart!

so you see my dilemma, please someone know what all this is cause im going crazy, i mean this computer is so stupidly slow  thanks in advance

how does on do that, i cannot get into windows at all, i get to just before the windows loading screen appears and then it hits me with that missing or corrupt business

You need to get a system boot disk and boot into that. Make sure it has a copy of the CHKDSK command on it.

Or you should be able to run the command from a command prompt from the recovery console. Just type in CHKDSK /r

:)

See how that goes..

the recovery console is the MSDOS style thing right? cause i got into that before the whole VGA.SYS is corrupt business and i couldn't go further as it said administrator password (which i never put on?) i would just format my disk if i could (full of crap anyways) but i can't even do that, is vista 64 any good?

Are you booting from the windows CD? .. Did you change your boot order in the BIOS?

When the booting, it will say "boot from CD.. hit any key".. It should give you an option to go into the recovery window. This is loaded from the CD not the HD so it should be ok.

reading your post again.. don't use the option when you select R from windows because the GUI is already loaded.. you need to boot from the install disk and get into the recovery console from there... It's under repair.. Al'l that has happend is that your system files have become corrupt for some reason.. the CHKDSK /r just repairs them.

yeah i changed boot priority in BIOS to boot from CD-ROM, this is straight from my official XP disc thats been in my PC a total of four times, it starts loading the XP setup screen and it stops saying VGA.SYS is corrupt, setup cannot continue

I'd maybe suggest the following:
Set the pc to stock settings first if it is overclocked.
Make a bootable memtest and hdd test cd, use both to see if they flag up any errors.
If they come back clear, do you have another pc you can boot the XP disk on, just to make sure the disk isn't faulty.

Not sure what to suggest other then those really.

it is already set to stock (after it first happened) i checked windows disk and im shocked to say it happened with the other computer as well, VGA.SYS is corrupt, what the hell does that mean, do i need new OS? :( if so is vista 64 any good for my setup (see sig)

I see no reason why Vista 64-bit shouldn't work, but it there anyone you could borrow an XP disk off?

If your XP disk is damaged, there are companies that can repair disks. One I know of is Scratchbusters, but haven't used them myself.
