SO my friend has a custom built PC and he is having some issues.
The other day he went to start it up and it just would post at all, no video output, no bios splash screen, no beep codes. nothin. The weird thing was that the fans spin up, the cpu fan spins up, the CD/DVD drive also starts up and you can also hear the HDD starting up but nothing.

He has had problems in the past with this system, he had blue screening issues and had to replace his ram. I suspect this is a power supply issue as the one he has is just a generic ~400w PSU. I suspect that even though it's only a year old the generic PSU hasn't lasted.

Although one other thought was that it was his motherboard at fault since there is not even a bios beep, but a psu is probably cheaper to replace than an entire motherboard.

he is using a Gigabyte 78lmt-usb3 board with an AMD quad core (i'm not sure what cpu specifically it is) and a generic PSU

any help would be much appreciated thanks!

I'd agree a different PSU is the place to begin.

SuperFlower Gold PSU, or one of the budget EVGA 500w (80+ or 80+Bronze) if he doesn't want to spend much. The latter are good for the money and will/should at least last longer than one of those generic/nameless PSUs.

Yeah hopefully if I can pick up a good quality, good value one, then at least if it isn't the PSU, and it is the mobo, he will still have a good quality PSU instead of the generic? Any thoughts on if it is the board at fault?
Cheers.

Ok So I am restarting this topic, My friend has since Replaced his motherboard with an MSI 970 Gaming and his power supply with a corsair CX 430 watt power supply. His system still will not POST. Could his CPU just have randomly failed? is this possible it is only a 2 year old CPU (AMD FX4300)
Thanks

Using A GPU, We have allready tried an alternate GPU aswell as on-board on his old motherboard. The new MSI board doesnt have on-board but i treid a different GPU with that also, still no dice.

Its pretty unlikely the CPU outright died.Do you know if it was OC'ed?

If the ramkit comes in two sticks have you tried removing one and seeing if it will post? Do you have any other ram you can try on the board?

Yeah The CPU was stock out of box speed, I have tried, no ram, one stick of ram, both sticks, Then tried, one of my own sticks from my system, then both, still with no luck. It's really frustrating what the cause of this is. He just turned it off for one night, the next morning this happens?

I have that mobo. It's like £40. It came with my pc as I bought it pre built. I want to get rid of my AMD set up for Intel as they are better but since my system is a year old there is no justification

That does sound rather bizzare

Did he double check that the monitor he was using maybe didnt just die and thats the culprit?

The 78lmt-usb3 is actually a great little motherboard.Heatsinked VRMs/display output/mATX and dirt cheap.

Yeah man got it sitting right here, I tried booting it with it connected to my second monitor, no dice again. This is one of the weirdest things i've ever seen. Why would a system just die overnight?? so,so strange. I hope if we keep brainstorming ideas we might find something. It is probably going to end up being something which is easily overlooked. Or if in doubt we will just replace the CPU, which costs more money...

Yeah we had a feeling that it died so we have since replaced it with the MSI Gaming 970, With no luck...

Try outside of the case with just the mobo, 1 stick of RAM and a CPU.
No fans or anything connected and see if it powers up.

Yeah tried that, though not tried it with no fans, meybe a short somewhere? I'll try it on my anti static mat tomorrow, see if I get anywhere?
Thanks

I was building a PC up the other week and accidentally plugged a fan into what looked like fan header, but wasn't! It was shorting the RAM slots and causing the BOOT to hang, only realised when I stripped everything down.

just an update:

I have tried powering on the system outside and inside the case with no fans or anything plugged in apart from GPU Ram and CPU, still to no avail. :(
Anyone else got some ideas that would be of great help thanks again

Can you get a processor from somewhere? Bar both RAM stick being dead its all thats left really.

Yeah Problem is I don;t know anywhere where I can just get another AM3 socket CPU without buying one for test purposes. I have tried the 2 sticks or RAM in my system and it recognises all 8GB so the RAM can't be an issue
