HELP! System won't power on with 8800 GTX

Hi all,

I have just installed a 8800GTX in my system. I have a Thermaltake Purepower 680W
PSU and I have attached both of the pci-e power connectors to the card. When I try
pressing the power button to turn the system on there is a split second of activity
and then it turns off again.

Any ideas what is wrong here? :( PSU should be enough no?

Many thanks,
Richard.

Specs :

GA-K8NXP-SLI
Opteron 185
Corsair 2GB TWINX2048-3200C2PRO
2 x 72GB WD Raptor 10000 RPM (RAID 0)
2 x 500GB WD Caviar RE2 (RAID 1)
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTX KO ACS3

Thanks for the quick reply gurusan.

Don't know yet, as I was only able to test the new card quickly during my lunch break.
I will be trying my original card again tonight.

The one thing I did quickly try was to unplug the two PCI-e power connectors to see
if the reduced power drain from the card allowed the system to power up longer. When
I did this it seemed to stay up for a split second longer, the system lights powered up a bit brighter but then powered off again.

Cheers,
Richard.

Don't use the PCI-E connectors. It appears they are not supplying enough juice to the card. Try using 2 direct molex connectors (with the 6 pin adaptors on of course) instead. I had exactly this problem with my PSU also when using the PCI-E connectors. Seems for some PSUs they are not adequate.

Best to try out your old card again before you do anything as it may well be something else other than the PSU or graphics card. You may have accidently damaged the motherboard whilst installing the new card for example.

I've had bad experiences with the Purepower 680, had two of them die on me for no reason. Also, I seem to recall that they came out before the PCI-E spec was finalised and they had the wrong wiring on the connectors. They did supply adapters in the box of all but the earliest ones - make sure you are using them.

well sounds like a psu since GTX takes allot of power and u have 2 raptors.

connect 1 hdd,dvd rom,gtx and see if the system boots. use PCI-E power molex if u have them

Thanks for all the replies.

Firegod - Yes it appears to be seated right, but I will check again. The only thing that concerns me is that the card lies flat on top of the metal Northbridge fan case . Maybe its shorting out, I'll have to check it.

melbourne720 / killer_uk - Yep, the AMPs are 15A on the first two and 8A on the third one. I hope both the 15A goes to both PCI-E cables.

Doppleganger - Interesting. So your system powered off instantly too? Seems a bit weird that the system powers off if the graphics card can't get enough juice. The older cards just used to beep. I think I've run out of molex connectors off my PSU but I'll see what I can disconnect for now.

titaniumx3 - Yep. Will try my other two PCI-E cards tonight to see what happens.

Crowze - I did have the original 680W Purepower with the wrong PCI-E power connectors (no adapters!) originally, until the PSU developed a noise and had it replaced a while back with a newer up-to-date 680W Purepower with the correct PCI-E connectors.

Cheers,
Richard.

Specifically as soon as I ran any 3d app the PSU squeaked and shut down. Removing the 2 PCI-E connectors from my card and replacing them with adapted standard molex connectors instantly resolved the issue. My conclusion was that there wasn't enough juice coming through the 2 PCI-E connectors to power my card.

hi m8 just a thought, on your cable that comes from psu, has it got 2 pci-e ends on it?...(psu>>>1xcable>>>2xpci-e) if it has,you have to power the other pci-e connection on the gtx with another cable from the psu ;) hope this helps m8
