Help to OC my 6600K

I'll get a stick tomorrow and run the test.

But I just opened my Libreoffice document with my memory running at 3200 MHz and I saw some screen glitching and idle temps around 31 degrees.

I then went into BIOS and cleared the XMP profile so that the RAM runs at standard 2133MHz, and I'm getting idle temps of 21 degrees and no glitching in the same large libreoffice document.
 
Well maybe not but I paid for 3200 MHz ram so not great.

Is it normal for there to be a temperature difference when running the RAM faster?



Edit 22:55. With the CPU overclocked as per previous settings documented here, but the RAM on 2133 MHz, I do not appear to be getting the issue.

OCing the i5 6600K on the GA-Z170-Gaming K3 (same as the OP's setup) was a piece of cake here. All I had to do was up the CPU multi to 45 and add a 15mV positive offset to the CPU voltage. I bumped up the turbo core multis to 45, 44, 43 and 42 as it runs a couple of degrees cooler that way than putting them all on 45 and makes almost no difference to overall performance.

It's Prime95 'In-place large FFTs' stable for 4 hours. I've not bothered stress testing beyond that, but it's been running almost 24/7 for the past week including some heavy gaming sessions lasting for several hours at a time without a hiccup.

I won't be going any further than 4.5GHz as I can't reliably stress test any higher with a Raijintek Aidos HSF without bouncing off the thermal throttling limit, but it's not gone over 65degC yet when gaming or x264 video encoding, so I'm happy.

Maybe I just got lucky having it this easy (a 'golden' CPU maybe?), but it's definitely the easiest overclocking task I've ever had in over 20 years of custom building. :cool:

The XMP profile might be the problem. You need to test the RAM with Memtest. If it passes, you can get the desired speed without using the XMP profile.

That is what OCUK customer service have suggested too, so ill try that later after running memtest.

Inputting a manual ram profile means using the latency settings on the ram, manually upping the voltage to 1.35v, and setting the multiplier to 32 - is this correct and anything else?

Why wouldnt the xmp profile not work correctly?
 
Yea, set the speed and latency settings as they are printed on the RAM. Don't touch the RAM voltage.

XMP can be temperamental. On my board with my RAM, if I use the XMP setting then my BCLK changes and my M.2 SSD runs at reduced speed!
 
The 1.2V applies for its non-XMP default speed. It's 1.35V for 3200 speed.

Is this RAM on the motherboard's supported list? I'm guessing it is as it's a very common model. No harm in checking though.

I've checked on the Gigabyte website and it's on the supported list for that motherboard. It doesn't specify for which BIOS version though and there are BIOS updates stating "Improve DDR XMP compatibilty", so maybe you need a later BIOS version than the one you have.

Dialling it in manually should still work though if you don't fancy updating the BIOS.
 
Ok ill try that then. Do i need to let memtest run its full course or is nearly an hour enough testing?

Can i confirm settings please i dont want to break anything.

I change multiplier to 32.
I change dram voltage from auto to 1.35
I enter the latency settings as 16 - 18 - 18 - 36
 
I'd let it run through at least one complete pass personally. It's a bit of a waste not testing all of it at least once as it won't prove anything useful.

I cannot set the dram voltage to 1.35v. The motherboard will only let me enter 1.34v or 1.36v.

Which setting?



Maybe this is why I was having a problem - if the XMP profile was trying to load 1.35V yet the motherboard cannot accept that as a value.

Guys sorry to bump but im stuck now and need help to move on.

I started a thread over in the memory section to help solve my specific ram issue. I set the ram to 1.36v and manually entered the timings. Generally it works, but im now having an intermittent boot failure on post, usually from cold start.

I was advised that to get the ram to run stable at 3000mhz or more i may need to up the motherboard voltage. But i dont know what setting this is called?

My current settings are as follows.

Cpu 4.4ghz at 1.24v
Ram 3000mhz at 1.36v with 18/16/16/36 timings.

Once booted im getting passes on the stress tests, its this intermittent booting issue now.
