hi all

I need help setting up a VPN at home for my vu+ solo2 satellite box.

its s when im not at home ( either at work or on the road) I can watch all my tv channels but keeping my box secure from hackers etc as I have to open and forward ports in my router.
so I really need some technical persons brains at the moment.
I can watch the channels now, but as im not using a VPN my box isn't secure

please hope somebody can help

Hi,

What image are you running on the box? There are various ways you could go about this depending how secure you want it and what router you have?

I'm assuming the Vu+ box is running Open Webif? If so, do you have a user/password set on the web interface at least as personally I'd be happy enough with that along as the password was strong.

If you really want to go the VPN route then there are OpenVPN packages available on all the Enigma2 images I have tried so I'd be happy to help you out setting this up if needs be, however it's probably overkill.

If you confirm what image you are running, what router you have and any other comments on the points above I'll keep an eye out for replies.

Cheers

Hi illusion,

Im running Blackhole 2.0.8, I was it secure but not overboard just enough so people cannot gain access to my box etc.

and I have a Sky SR101 router - I think it is called the white all in one thing

yes when I watch my box via my computer it opens Open Webif via my Internet browser, no I do not have a password set for this web interface, nt sure how to set one for it to be honest.

On my box running a recent version of OpenPLI if I go to Menu -> Plugins -> OpenWebif, there are two options there to enable http/https authentication and both are ticked. Try checking in a similar location on your box and enable them if they aren't already.

By default it uses the root user/pass combination so if you haven't changed this already you'll want to set it now, you can do this by telnet'ing to the box and running passwd.

Let me know how you get on or if you need anymore help

Hi yes I have enabled authentication

now im trying to tel net to the box which iv never done before but somebody told me download PUTTY

iv entered my box IP address and clicked telnet and the command promot opens

it asks for the username and password.

now I know username is : root but I need to set a password but whatever I type here it will not accept.
iv tried leaving it black, passwd, vusolo2 root etc

Apparently it could also be vuplus so give that a try too? It can vary between images but if that doesn't work either then there might be a menu option or plugin that can do it too.

That shouldn't make a difference as the authentication you've enabled is just for OpenWebif and shouldn't affect the system password. Let me just check my menu to see if you can change the password there

OK if you go to Menu -> Plugins -> Download plugins -> System plugins, look for one called setpasswd, if you install that then once it's finished go to Menu -> Setup -> System, there should be an option that says change root password.

Never had to do this myself but I just installed the plugin now to test and thats what each step was on my box so yours should be similar hopefully.

nope I cannot find that

anyway iv just entered my IP address on my web browser on my pc and now its asking for username and password which it never did before

only iv not even set a password for it but yet its asking for it

Yea it will do but I don't think it will let you in until you change the password to be something other than the default or at least that's the behaviour I saw when I recently upgraded my box and had to do the basic config again.

Just to confirm are you definitely using telnet to connect to the box and not SSH? I don't use putty but earlier on you mentioned it said port 22 or 23, telnet is port 23.

SSH is preferred but I think you have to connect with telnet before the password has been changed then you can login by ssh afterwards, this is a possible explanation.

I'm not sure what else I can recommend over here, I've definitely noticed weirdness myself when doing initial config on a new image install, have you tried connecting with SSH rather than telnet? Try ssh, user root, no password, I don't expect this to work, but then try telnet again after with the same credentials and see if anything changes.

I tend to use a Mac or Linux which both have terminals, if you're on Windows some versions have telnet installed by default that you can run from a command prompt, but I think from Vista onwards you have to install telnet manually via add remove programs / features in the control panel.

Changing the program won't really do much though it definitely sounds like the image on the box is causing the problem. How recent is the Blackhole image you are using?

Hi Illusion

some how I have managed to figure out the default password on my box, it appeared that blackhole comes with its own default password

anyway, please when you get time help me set up a VPN so my box is secure so I can watch my Box when im not at home

thank you really appreciate all your help
