I've got an old HDD which I need to transfer files from however I don't have IDE support on my pc. I managed to borrow USB to IDE cable from a friend but It didn't come with power cable. I have plugged the USB>IDE cable and used a redundant power point from the psu to power the HDD, windows gives the usual message that a new device is installed but it's not visible on my computer. There's no jumpers on back of HDD. Bit miffed and don't know what else to try, any ideas guys?? Sorry for noob Q, brains fried from reality...

Are you sure the USB->IDE cable is fully functioning without the dedicated power brick? Some of the circuitry may require more power than USB can provide.

do the usual stuff.. check device manager and make sure there are no red crosses or exclamation marks anywhere.

go to disk manager (diskmgmt.msc) and make sure you can see the volume there... it might just not be assigned a drive letter.

and I guess make sure the drive is vibrating/making noise, and not completely dead...

Lots of ways to do this but if You find a copy of "hirens boot cd" and put it on a CD or flash drive, when it boots You will see an option for "mini windows xp" which is happy to allow multiple primary active drives etc..

If You have AHCI/RAID on the drives You need to work with, "F6" on loading....:D suppose you don't have a floppy either !...hopefully You won't need it ;)

Just make sure the new HDtoUSB is connected before boot. If this does not work there are plenty of other apps on the boot CD that will image or copy the Data

Before You Do above make sure the Harddrive is set to "MASTER" usb adapters will not function with anything else
