Every faith in these forums, but I think my HDD is scragged on my laptop. XP home installation

When I attempt to boot, get BSOD "unmountable boot volume". Booting from XP disc and using the recovery console I have tried chkdsk /r, but it stalls after 41% and I get "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems" . I am assuming that my HDD has failed.

Anything else anyone can suggest?

Thanks

yes ..try ..

Boot from XP disc and using the recovery console ...

Type ... fixmbr

then

Type ... fixboot

if that fails .. find out what make and model of your H/D ... goto there website and download dos disk management software ...

Right,

fixmbr didn't work. Ran Hitachi driver fitness test, and it comes up with "defective device. component failure" so I suppose I am up a certain creek without a means of propulsion.

:(

If there's stuff on the laptop you are needing you could try downloading a Knoppix iso and burning it to a CD.

I can't remember, but I'm sure Knoppix will come with some kind of cd burning software, which means you could backup any files. (Providing the HDD is readable).

It's at least something else to try before you bin the drive.

Best of luck :)

coincidence, the same thing happened on one of our work PC's this morning.

We rectified it by:

Booting from Windows XP CD

go into recovery console

from the windows partition, run chkdsk

this found and fixed errors

after this we ran fixboot from the console and created a new boot partition if i remember correctly

restarted computer, and everything now works fine
