Help Upgading from a 3500 to X2 processor?

I'm sorry if I've skipped pass someone already saying this but why not just press Alt + Tab and then go to Task manager. Right click on the game being played and set the affinity to one core?. I've only had issues with the GodFather (FPS limiter is set to 30 and X2 pushed it to 45 which made it jumpy). And NHL06, would freeze about 2 times a second till I set the affinity to one CPU.

Every other game has been fine. I've used it for months without the dual core optimizer and only put it in a few days ago when I installed Company of Heroes. No change though.

I don't see how you didn't get a boost by going x850 to x1900 lol. I went from 9800pro to X800XT PE(AGP) to 7600GT OC (PCI-X) X1900XT and I noticed a big change each move.

Have you still got the same PC now?.

Yes, I have to agree.

I have NEVER had any problems as such with not using the dual core optimizer.

There was one however... Playing MIDIFILES through WinAmp. They would spit fart and whistle on occasion, but other than that, its just perfectly fine without it.

How are you finding life in the dual core world then?

Every seems to be working fine. The standard temp when not doing to much seems to be round the 30/35'C mark. Playing games seems to be about the same, but when it comes to encoding and multitasking it does feel a lot faster.

As soon as I put the new processor in, and started windows It worked straight away and task manager shows two cores running. I have installed the AMD drivers, but not the optimizer. The fan that came with my original 3500 was the
Akasa AK-860 Low Noise CPU Cooler (Socket 754 & 939), which is working fine.

Get a new cooler! There's a reason why AMD don't even supply the same type-of cooler within the X2 range.

Sorry but your wrong with that advice, ACF 64 Pro is no better than stock cooler on X2's and if you intend a minor o/c well forget it. Just cant cope and was not designed to take on two cores at once.

Is an akasa evo 33 going to be enough for a stock x2 4400? I just upgraded from a 3200, and i was using the evo on that. Or should i use the stock hs/ fan that comes with the 4400?

What are you talking about? The ACF 64 Pro certainly is MUCH better than the stock x2 cooler. I have a friend running one of these on his 3.4ghz Presler and it keeps it around 45c dual orthos.

I run the AF64 on a 3800 at 2.8 Just fine. Im getting 48c loaded, 34c Idle

I run one on my Opteron @ 2.48 and never see above 50c

I also have one on the 4400 at 2.5 and again, never see above 50c

Those are all x2 CPUs and the only reason the temps are high is because the case cooling isnt too good in those systems, otherwise the temps would be lower.

Oh, my 2 intel systems are freezer cooled too!

E6300 @ 3.4 = 50c ( Folding on both cores 24/7 )
Prescott 660 @ 4.3 Ghz = 58c

Ok so my bro and I obviously didn’t seat his 4600 with ACF 64 Pro in all three attempts with AS-5 paste very well and by some sheer stroke of luck got it spot on with Evo120 first time with respectable temps...continue flaming... Before replying here I’ve mailed my bro who’s at Uni and asked if he tried out ACF 64 pro again, had a reply back saying mate tried it out on his 4200 and was not impressed either.

Perhaps I should be more detailed; stock cooler he received with 4600 is the 4pipe stock one, at stock ok temps however was poor when over clocking, the Freezer Pro was marginally better than stock cooler on idle + load (about 2c at best) & as poor when o/c. (I don’t call 58c during SP2004 stress test 2.8 o/c from 2.2 on all three re-seats good when side off with case ambient 24c)

Anyway just my opinion after experience with it, if id got good temps then my bro wouldn’t have to take my old Evo120 off my hands which to my surprise was a hell of a lot better (6/8c drop on ave). My bro purchased the cooler because I told him so after reading reviews (mostly testing with single core) + taking he's budget into account, felt guilty afterwards as he couldn’t return product so gave him my Evo120. So to answer your question – I’m talking from my personal experience with the product. Yes we may have got a duff one or just bad luck and since un-returnable; bro is not willing to shell out & try again which understandable.

Not after war of words here, just felt id explain since people got on there high horse at me…

I've also had trouble with my, now unused, Freezer64Pro not cooling my X2 4200+ enough when it was overclocked. With a room temp of around 18c / case temp of 25c, the X2 would be sitting at 50c@load in Orthos at stock settings. This is with a 56cfm 120mm intake fan / 60cfm 120mm exhaust fan in my case ( as well as the 120mm fan on the underside of the psu )

Tried remounting it 3 times, changing the way I applied AS5 each time - thick & thin coverage over ISH, and grain sized dot on centre of IHS as AS recommend - with no worthwhile change in temps ( only let each application settle for 2-3 days though, not the 5-10 AS say )

Then again since both the cpu cores are 10c apart at load ( one 40, the other at 50 - 26c , 29c idle temps ) If they were closer together, which I realise isn't AC's fault, then I might have been happier with my temps when using the Freezer64 Pro.

My dads freezer pro 64 keeps his x2 4800+ at 33 idle, 45 under load (reasonably cooled case with its fan running at 900RPM via header control)

Quiet and a darn sight better than the stock cooler!! Not bad at all for £14.

My guess would be you guys with the poor freezer performance didnt seat it centrally. It took us a few goes, you haveto make sure the little nipple things are seated in the brackets holes correctly for a good tight fit (hehe) as well as moving it yourself slightly once both sides are on (but the clamp isnt clamped) to make it central on the core.

If its a decent one, then 450w will be just fine.

What make is it?

Magna, Qtec, Mercury etc then you will probably need a Trillion watts for it to be worth it.
