Hey,

after doing a lot of reading up i decided to upgrade my Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler to a Zalman CNPS9500-AT CPU Cooler. but, despite what iv read about the zalman my temps appear to be the same. iv not got my cpu overclocked at all (i have a Q6600efe btw) and my start temps for the cpu come in at 38-40oC and with little load (ie, Media player) go to 43oC-48oC with the fan speed apparently at 100% (reads 2637rpm) in Abit EQ and Speedfan.

does this sound normal? as iv read people with the same cpu and cooler getting idle temps between 30-35oC and surely the Zalman should perform better than the Arctic Cooling anyway!!!

just incase it helps i applied Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste and have an IP35 mobo.

all help greatly appreciated, im still learning a lot so please bear with me lol :D

How much arctic silver? is it all seated nice and tightly? and what other fans in the case?

Only things i can think of off had

The AC Freezer 7 Pro is a very good CPU cooler indeed. It's cheap because it has a very cheap level of construction, but when fitted properly it works very well indeed. I'm not at all surprised that you haven't seen any drop in temperatures between them.

You should also bear in mind that if the CPU fan is under the control of the motherboard it will bring the fan in to control temperatures at the same point, no matter what cooler you have fitted. So if the basic level was 35-38 that's what it would always be, irrespective of cooler.

thanx for the response, i assume this isnt quite normal then?

ok, i applied a very thin layer across the whole cpu, prob started out as about half or even a third of a sweetcorns worth (sorry, best i can think of lol!!)

i got it as tight as i could, but i'll recheck later after iv done stuff as it was at 5 this morning. but im pretty sure its ok as i was to paranoid it would fall off when i fitted it.

not sure what the ambient temp of my lviing room is but i do like it cool, windows wide open etc. (even in winter lol) and the computer is set up right by the window. heres the readings iv got at the mo from Abit EQ & Speedfan:

CPU LOAD= jumping between 7-14%
CPU TEMP= 46-47oC
SYSTEM TEMP= 31oC
PWM TEMP= 41oC (what is PWM btw?)
CPU FAN= 100% (2636RPM)
FAN 1= 1534RPM
FAN 2= 1430RPM

i have a fan at the front & rear with the correct airflow (just double checked). and i cleaned the rear fan this morning too. any suggestions? is it worth re-applying thermal grease or using the grease i got with the cooler? applied arctic silver as read it was better.

Try thrashing it with prime95 of something.

Heatpipes work better the greater the temperature difference from the cold side to the hot side.

See where it max's out.
