I currently have the following

Gigabyte 970a-DS3 Rev 3.0
FX-4170
560TI
16gb DDR3

I initially thought about upgrading my graphics card but seems a bit of a stretch,im wanting to upgrade in stages so looking for advice on how to do this.

Im thinking of buying a new motherboard and cpu cheap as i can get that i can upgrade over the next few months but i need it to take my existing ram and GPU.

The other option is getting a octa core cpu though im lost with regard to if this will be better than what i have. The board i have can support

Or should i just overclock everything i have.

@pesmerga12

Ryzen 1400 4 cores 8 threads wipes the floor with FX 4*** chips and even beats FX8*** . Could even use 4 core 4 thread ryzen 1200 but 1400 has better life

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £443.06 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Intel version , 4 cores 4 threads with new i3 coffeelake

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £400.06 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Upgrading GPU and then CPU/MOBO/(RAM) is doable. Your new graphics card will work with any motherboard. If you don't want to budget for DDR4 then Intel Haswell (4th gen) is the best you can get to. Plenty of deals to be had second hand, but for not much more you can go Ryzen as stated, with warranty and extra core count :)

just a quick look at the bay -
if you want haswell 4790-k cpu+board, this will set you back approx £300
if you want ivy 3770-k cpu+ board, this will set you back £200

with either of these, you can drop your 16gb ddr3 ram straight in and use it
bad points are that these carry no warranty
with haswell, spectre fixes may slightly degrade cpu performance, and with ivy, i don't think they're getting any spectre fixes at all...
so...just depends on what you want.

as per @orbitalwalsh 's spec, you can get ryzen 1400, b350 board and 8gb ddr4 ram for ~£280.
this will perform at around the same level of the 3770k and 4790k (without massive overclocks)
with ryzen being value-for-money +++, i'd honestly say, just save up and then get a new platform, at least will have peace of mind with warranty

you could get a fx8320 to replace the fx4170 you have, which would increase the cpu performance, but your board's vrms might not handle the power requirements and throttle a lot (and may actually lose performance in game)
another option is to get the fx6100, but this, imo should only be a stop-gap option.

in my opinion, whatever way i try to spin it in my head, a full platform upgrade appears to be the most sensible and value-for-money choice

also, if you're intending to keep the computer for any extended length of time (which i assume you are - given you're using an fx4170 :p) - i'd avoid getting the intel i3 - this is only a quad core processor with no hyperthreading...it's going to struggle in the near forseeable future...
ryzen 1400 with 4 cores and 8 threads is the better option

I think one of the hardest things about this is that your probably going to have to step down to 8GB of RAM unless you want to be spending £500, having said that at least you could sell your current bits and probably buy an extra 8GB when you can, though 8GB is fine for most games tbh...

Super cheap as you go intel build, would probably be ok with a CFL Pentium, but it's definitely weaker than the Ryzen build above (it's only 2c4t)

The proicessor should be able to be overclocked - I had a 4300 overclocked from 3.8Ghz to 4.6Ghz and it was much better (and not hugely warmer, but I added a Zalman ps14x)
