Help us choose a new TV...

Hello all.

First post in here so go gentle with me.

Right, my dad is after a new TV to replace our trusty old Toshiba model. He's prepared to spend £1000-£1200. I've looked at a few myself but to be honest i'm not to sure who's best, the differences in HD resolutions, etc. Any help would be most appreciated.

We already have a sky subscription so whether it has a tuner is neither here nor there.

Models i've looked at:

*Samsung LE37R41B 37" HD Ready LCD TV - £1153.99
*Also an LG which my dad was looking at, model number escapes me at the moment but that was 37" and about £1000

And slightly over:
*Samsung LE40R51B 40" HD Ready LCD TV - £1254.98


Any help on choosing a new TV would be most appreciated. Especially if we can find one before the world cup starts.

Samsung and LG are the best around for price/performance, the fact you've already narrowed it down to those means you don't really need any help - just go with personal preference.

They all have the required connectivity and resolutions for HD.

Be careful with the LG, there are bad reviews for the 32" version of the Z55 set, so have a good/careful look at the 37" one if you're considering it. There are

I'd steer clear of the Samsung LEXX41 as that's been superseded with the LEXX74B series.

The LG 32LX2R is a good 32inch HDTV. I have the 26inch model, and well it is great. But it is a shame you cannot spend more, then you could buy a 1080p HDTV.

I have the LG 55 and it's superb. I don't know about sound as I use my surround but for the 360 it's great, it suffers from the usual LCD complaints but you have to accept that the pic will never be as good as a CRT. The colours are fantastic, the only thing I dislike is the actual chassis but whatever...
