Hey,

Over the past few weeks I’ve been more and more tempted to buy a 20”+ wide screen monitor.

Ill be using the monitor mainly for gaming and web browsing and not willing to spend anything more than £400.

So I’ve looked into them and I cant decide which to go with. Either the Viewsonic VX2025wm or the NEC MultiSync® LCD20WGX2. Or could any of you suggest a different option – would be appreciated.

The main factor which will make my decision are 1:1 pixel mapping, forced 4:3 and stretched functions.

I’m really confused over this, I don’t seem to be able to get a clear idea over what the differences are. I seem to be getting mixed explanations, eg “1:1 is good”, “1:1 is bad” etc.

I’m mostly bothered about how my games, especially the older ones that don’t support 16:10, will look. I don’t want my games to appear in a small box in the centre of the screen – I assume forced 4:3 wouldn’t allow this to happen? Whereas stretched would stretch the image over the whole screen resulting in distortion? I don’t know.

Basically I really am confused over this and would be grateful if any of you could clear this up or me. :)

Cheers.

Well I just bought a NEC 20WGX2 and its 1:1 pixel mapping is very handy. I believe the VX2025 doesn't have this feature.

Say you have a game that is too demanding to run in the monitor's native res of 1680x1050, and you feel it running in a lower res widescreen looks too blurry (which can often be the case)....then you can map it to say 1280x960, 1024x768 or whatever, pixel for pixel instead of stretching it and therefore making it unnatural and blurry :) Granted, you'll have black borders at the sides but its better than nothing.

I also had both the monitors you mention along with a couple of others on my shortlist for quite a while and agonised over it too. In the end I chose the NEC because of its better all round panel technology (AS-IPS) and very fast response speed, one of the fastest tfts on the market right now, which suits my gaming needs. I also do a lot of photoshop work and the superior colour definition of this monitor sold me too. Upgrading from a CRT it was important I kept a good colour reproduction for my work.

The only caveat emptor this monitor holds is if you don't like glossy screens. Some people hate them, while others like me love them for their knack of bringing pictures alive and giving them more depth :)

Thanks, thats cleared it up for me. ;)

I dont think the glossy screen would bother me that much so it looks like ill be ordering the NEC then. Upgrading from a 17” TFT so I think it will take some getting used to, not to mention the glossy screen. Maybe about a day…
