I currently have an antec sonata 2 with the included power supply.

Just had a warning display from both asus probe and speed fan telling me that my 3.3v rail is low, just checked and its averaging @ 2.5v.

While doing this i've checked the 12v and 5v both are fluctuating at very low levels (12v@ 11.6 - 12.2, 5v@ 4.6 - 5.1) and the v core is also fluctuating wildly (set @ 1.4v but goes from 1.35 anywhere up to 1.5v!)

New power supply needed?!!!

Thanks

I have the same mobo and the vcore does tend to fluctuate a lot. mine with overvolt option on fluctuates between 1.44 ~ 1.47. With my PSU the 12V+ rail never go over 12V+, it's between 11.98 ~11.78 depends on load.

That does sound like it is a problem but do you have access to a multimeter? That is the only sure way to know how solid the rails are, PC Probe has always been pretty accurate for me though. :)

Just got my dad's multimeter to try it on but the computer randomly restarted again! Will post back soon with results.......hopefully!

EDIT: sorry to be an idiot but where am I to measure from?

Ok just checked using the multimeter - 12v rail @ 12.27 - 11.70, 5v rail @ 5.1 - 4.9.

I don't know how to check the 3.3v rail :(

i don't know if this multimeters dodgy but some really big fluctuations keep appearing (e.g 0.5v out on the 12v rail!)

Sorry then but it does definitely sound like new PSU time, variations like that are not healthy for a system and if it keeps on like that you may end up damaging the system. If you want a recommendation then for ~£70 you can get a Corsair 520w which is a great PSU, if you don't have that much to spend then an Akasa 460w comes in at around £50 but isn't modular and not quite as good. :)

As i feared then, i've already put a corsair psu into the basket just in case.

Oh well I guess my pc will be a little less cluttered now (modular - wooo! :D )

£80 inc p&p though - that's my wages gone for a couple of weeks!

Thanks for the help semi-pro (and steve) off to buy right away!

Theoritically the fluctuation is still within the standard ATX spec of +- 6% so it should still work, hey but what the heck you have a new PSU  , can't go wrong with corsair!
