trying a new thread, i am looking for a new gaming spec PC, looking to spend upto 1000.. Will i get a VR machine for this, is it needed?
thanks all

read through that still non the wiser ;), guy at work said go for skylake not haskell, but do i go i5 or i7 and spend more on the graphics card? memory min 16gig these days?

8GB minimum these days, GTX970 absolute minimum for Occulus Rift. so I's go 16GB and 980 then see what money is left.
Depending on budget Haswell has more powerful processors at the moment but that is about to change.
I went X99 and i7 5930 with 16GB for my latest upgrade as it's stable technology, I'll wait to see how Skylake progresses.
Andi.

ANY GOOD?

Surely you'll want a CPU cooler?

Anyway, the new ranges of GPUs are rumoured to be being launched at Computex in June, so you might want to hold off for now.

my recommendation, if you can stretch the budget a little would be:

Skylake i5, not necessarily 6600K
16GB DDR4 2400MHz
GTX 980Ti 6GB
500GB SSD

for a gaming rig this would give you much more performance.

The next CPU release is on the 2011 platform which means that you'll likely have to increase your budget by a further £200-£300. Since CPU power has much less influence on gaming performance than VGA it doesn't seem worth it to me. If you had that sort of money to spend it would make more sense to look at SLI.

There is no new CPU for the Z platform until at least October and I'd be surprised if it's anything more than a dye shrink.

Is it worth the extra for the 980 over the 970 which is 200 cheaper??

Personally I think it is. The extra 2GB of VRAM is rapidly becoming necessary for smooth performance.

Due to the requirements of the most recent games and the rapid spread of 1440p gaming I feel like 6GB VRAM is going to be the standard very soon indeed.

If you are currently gaming in 1080p then it is less clear cut whether the 980Ti is worth the extra cash, however if you already have or think that you may soon make the move to 1440p, even 4K then the performance difference is considerable.

Out of the 970, 980 and 980Ti the 980 is the least complying option IMO, the 970 (along side AMD's 390 non x) is the bank for buck card but the 980Ti offers a large performance gain over the 980 to make the 980 less valuable.

It's a shame the AMD Fury Nano isn't available at £300 anymore otherwise I would say get that over everything else.

spec keeps going up think i am now sold on this..

can this be overclocked?

Price on that system just shot up nearly £100. Guess it must have been on weekly offers and now back to regular price. Did you order it yet and did you get it at around £1,250 or £1,350?
