Hi guys,

My computer simply will not boot, and I've tried everything I possibly can. Could anyone maybe shed some insight as to which component may be the issue here:

So I turn the computer on, it will post fine, when it comes to booting from whatever device is selected it will simply reset, post again, and then reset at the same point etc etc.

It doesn't matter what device I want it to boot from, whether it's a mechanical drive, ssd, or dvd drive. Even usb drives cause the same issue - it simply will not boot and just resets.

As I mentioned, it will post fine, I can access the bios without issue, and I can even browse around the hard drive or usb drives using the bios 'E.Z. Flash Utility' so I don't think there's an issue with all of the drives.

I've tried a replacement graphics card, and no graphics card and it does the same thing.

I've reseated the CPU several times ensuring it's all as it should be, and that the heatsink isn't on too tight.

I've tried every possible combination of the two sticks of ram, in each slot, together and individually.

I've simply concluded it's either the CPU, or the motherboard, but am not sure which. Is there any way to determine?

Thanks :)

Components:

2500k
P8P67-M Pro
AMD 6950

latest bios? and is it a fresh install of windows or carried over from another pc?

left the mb battery out for 30minutes and then tried?

I did install the latest bios with no improvement.

It's an old install - my setup has been running absolutely fine for months, it is just today it has simply refused.

Haven't had the battery out for 30 minutes, but I did clear the CMOS using the jumper with the instructions provided by asus.

it wont boot from dvd drive? if your press f8 at splash screen you can pick dvd to boot from,try with the windows disk and do a startup repair

As I said, it will not boot from anything.

I have tried booting my ubuntu pen drive, I don't have a windows dvd, but I do have a windows disc image on an external hard drive that I normally use to install windows - this doesn't work either, and similarly even if I choose to boot from the dvd drive, despite the fact that there is nothing in there, it will reset itself just the same.

Was it overclocked? I assume it isn't now with the reset.

Is is a rev B2 or B3 board? Sata chipset issue.

It is unlikely to be the CPU IMO. But may be the motherboard. have you tried other SATA ports?

It was oc'd but obvuously isnt any more. Ive double checked this. It was only a mild oc of 4.2 ghz and has always been rock stable.

Its a b3 board so no sata issues.

I have tried a variety of sata ports and also tried booting from usb too ( without any sata drives) to no avail.

It is simply refusing to boot from any media

Just wondering how a boot sector virus in the MBR on a hard disk or VBR on a flash would cause this and whether this is so. I would have thought that a CD/DVD would be immune though. How could it propagate?

The bios boot sector is not usually overwritten when flashing I believe.

Not too sure on this, maybe someone could shed more light. A fully working PC that can not boot any device.

Well the thing is I can navigate around my drives in the bios when theyre connected. I can access all of the folders and view the files. This is how I managed to update the bios to the latest version. I am really puzzled.

Thats my thoughts. The only commonality is not booting. Between the bios loading a boot sector into memory and executing it or failing to load a boot sector at all is the issue.

Are you running the ubuntu flash or the windows image without the hard disk attached?

Are you able to get a copy of windows from a friend or anything, a fresh install seems to sound like what you need. Sounds like the MBR or BOOTMGR has corrupted, etc.

@Nkata

Yeah, I've tried everything independently, so when testing my ubuntu pen, there was no sata connected, similarly when trying my windows installer external hd, and when I used my ssd there was no other sata or any usb.

@TheReaperGuy

I've ruled out an issue with the hard drive as it will not boot any of my otherwise bootable devices (ubuntu on a usb pen, and a windows disk image on an external hdd)

Do you have another pc you can test components in?

It would be interesting to see the results for memtest on the ram. Also for the CPU if a compatible socket was available.

I would have done this if possible.

Unfortuntately I could only check my external hd, and ubuntu pen drive, and graphics card as the only other computer is a socket LGA775.

I'm just wondering whether there was anything else I could try :/ I don't think it's the ram as the symptoms don't really seem to make sense. The MemOK! test thing said the ram was ok too (not definitive, I know, but it still doesn't explain the symptoms.)

@Lee
The safe mode prompt would come up after where I'm getting to, so no. This definitely isn't an OS issue.
