My computer seems to be freezing shortly after startup.

I can see the startup applications loading, but after a point nothing seems to work. For example I started a virus scan in security essentials and it stalled after 5 seconds.
Ctrl alt delete does not work.

System starts fine in safe mode.

I am really not sure what is causing this, I figure it could be a virus or it could be a software crash that is bringing the system down.

I don't seem to be able to run my antivirus software (Comodo or security essentials) in safe mode.

I did install service pack 1 today along with a few other updates via the windows installer, and I suspect it may be the cause. Windows media player seems to have been updated as does my mouse drivers (sidewinder x8).

The crash first happened just after I installed sp1. I was playing a music file in windows media player. I clicked on another track and media player froze, ctrl alt del didn't work and I had to power down. Since then I have had a similar problem on startup.

Any suggestions for how to resolve this?

I don't have a system restore point saved.

I was thinking the best thing to do would be go re-install windows. If I do this will I lose everything on my c drive?

If so i would like to backup my documents outlook archives etc. But i thought i should make sure there is not a virus first. Can you suggest how I can do a virus scan in safemode?

I have never re- installed windows before, how do I go about it? I have the original DVD, do I just put it in, bring up the boot menu And select boot from DVD drive?

roll back to before you had sp1 and see if that works, ive heard that the sp1 is only a collection of updates and is only usful if you do a clean install so you dont need to do all the updates

Service Packs include many updates that weren't distributed via Windows Update. SP1 is well worth installing, even if you are fully up to date.

In safe mode open run and type "msconfig" in the startup select diagnostic startup to run the machine up using only windows services and drivers. When windows starts in normal mode go to msconfig again and in the services and startup tab start enabling things one at a time until you find whats causing the issue.

Alternatively, open up the machine in safe mode and go to control panel > administrative tools> Event viewer. When in event viewer filter the system events for critical and error events you should be able to start working out which driver or software is causing the crash from the logs.

Thanks for the suggestion, event viewer suggested it might by commodo and removing that from startup seems to have fixed things.

Sorry spoke to soon, that deffinately didn't fix things.

I think I will try a fresh install of windows.

Can someone tell me how to do that.

Do I need to backup my data first? For example if I have files sitting in my desktop folder will they get lost?
