My computer seems to be freezing shortly after startup.
I can see the startup applications loading, but after a point nothing seems to work. For example I started a virus scan in security essentials and it stalled after 5 seconds.
Ctrl alt delete does not work.
System starts fine in safe mode.
I am really not sure what is causing this, I figure it could be a virus or it could be a software crash that is bringing the system down.
I don't seem to be able to run my antivirus software (Comodo or security essentials) in safe mode.
I did install service pack 1 today along with a few other updates via the windows installer, and I suspect it may be the cause. Windows media player seems to have been updated as does my mouse drivers (sidewinder x8).
The crash first happened just after I installed sp1. I was playing a music file in windows media player. I clicked on another track and media player froze, ctrl alt del didn't work and I had to power down. Since then I have had a similar problem on startup.
Any suggestions for how to resolve this?
I don't have a system restore point saved.
I was thinking the best thing to do would be go re-install windows. If I do this will I lose everything on my c drive?
If so i would like to backup my documents outlook archives etc. But i thought i should make sure there is not a virus first. Can you suggest how I can do a virus scan in safemode?
I have never re- installed windows before, how do I go about it? I have the original DVD, do I just put it in, bring up the boot menu And select boot from DVD drive?
