Hi everyone,

Im looking for a bit of advice on a new build for a work PC.

My last build was from OCUK and done me well, its lasted me nearly 4 years but its time for an upgrade and im really out of touch with everything.

I need it only for work, no gaming.

I run a lot of apps at once, which are multithreaded web and socket based. The apps can make use of all cores as well.

I dont need a large amount of HD space just needs to be quick.

A good amount of ram, as most apps are ram intensive.

Im looking around £500-£600 with room to move if needed.

No OS needed either.

As i say im not up to date these days so any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Hii, thanks for the welcome!

No, i didnt think of that, thanks for pointing that out.

Do you think my budget it to low? i can move a little if need.

Thanks for the help.

PSU gives you a little head room should you wish to add cards etc..

Thanks for the input Admiral Huddy, appreciate it.

Everything looks good, just one quick question?

The 1TB harddrive is well overkill for my needs with this, prob a 100gb max will be needed. Im going to use my old PC which has 2 x 1TB HD for file storage, So i was thinking would i notice a big improvement spending a bit more and getting a SSD?

Thanks for your help

what kind of office apps are you using. will they need a decent graphics card because i only have onboard graphics in this. (something like CAD/CAM will need reasonable graphics i believe)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM £244.99
1 x Gigabyte Z68A-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £85.19
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Bundle - Home Premium 64 Bit £68.40
1 x Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKX) £29.99
1 x Cooler Master Elite 430 Windowed Case - Black (with 500w Elite Power PSU) £64.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Blu 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1333C9D3B1K2/8G) £49.99
1 x Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 Pro Extreme Performance CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775/1155/1156/1366/AM3/AM2+/AM2) £27.98
1 x OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £14.99
Total : £599.12 (includes shipping : £10.50).

i got the 2600k in the spec along with a decent cooler to allow you to overclock it. if you dont need a decent cooler then just buy the cheapest compatible cooler you can find, as the OEM processor comes without a cooler (and a shorter warranty)

Thank you Reaper, looks like a good build.

decisions decisions :)

I will have to have a good read up on both specs.

Thank you both

I would go with Reaper on this.. Hyper threading won't really help much with day-to-day apps but since the two systems come in at similar price, you might as well..

If you're thinking of an SSD, then this might be your your best buy (On special at the moment too):
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-076-OC&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1427

This will take advantage of the 6Gbps the motherboard supports for an seamless PC. Use this to host your OS and favorite apps, everything else such as data can go on the traditional drive.

the OP said they were multithreaded and multi cored apps, so i figured they were probably more than just an internet browser and microsoft word

Cheers guys.

Yeah the apps i use for work are custom built apps, that use all cores, and a lot of ram.

I think i will get the SSD as the apps will make great use of it.

Thank you for the help, i will ponder a day or two....which means i will get my credit card out tonight :D

It would be in budget if you go for a standard hard drive.

If your programs can make use of all cores, I assume a hex core rig would perform better? I'm not sure if that is still true with sandy bridge kicking around though.
Cheaper too, and unlike the other builds, includes the all important DVD drive.

Nope, an i7-2600k would perform better due to hyper-threading.
