Hi there,

Was in the HDD section back along with a HDD for someone else (old IDE 20Gb thing) that was clicking. (thread was called Clickty click click I think...)

Anywho that died (as I said it would) & I was able to lend a 40GB that's a lot more stable but just as slow.

They told me that they are going to use the Xmas monies & get me to build them a PC after xmas.

They only want a PC for web browsing, MSN, office and the ODD game (not FPS or RTS or anything.... Bit of Diner dash, Sims 2 & maybe Portal...)

They have atm a P4 1.9ghz with a crappy mobo (fujitsu siemens PC) and 256MB SDRAM. I know ANYTHING will be quicker than this and I think they are finally understanding this. They had 512 apparently but a stick died back along and this is when they noticed how slow it was. I have explained that a 256 or a 512 stick will cost less than £20 from the bay & would help for the time being but they want a whole PC after xmas.

Just to let you all know I have installed Portal onto the above PC (GFX card is a Radeon 9600Pro 256 Advantage....) And it does runs on low settings. They are more than happy to play it with the low quailty settings but when I showed them the difference between that and high (on another PC) they didn't like the settings to much but did get used to them again after 5 mins...

So basicly Im saying they don't need something reallllllllllly powerful but would like it to be as future proof as possible.

The user has no more than £300 to spend on everything bar the keyboard, mouse and monitor.

Thinking get a case with a PSU already installed, a GFX card that will last as long as possible but not be to expensive, 250-320gb HDD and a SATA DVD-RW drive.

Apparently the user has the following sorted for £50. Although it is not top notch I think that it will easily do for the rest of the year as they are thinking of then upgrading their mobo, cpu & RAM again in another yr & a half.

64 3400+ socket 754, Gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF-RH and 1GB geil RAM for £50

Will the combo above be enough power for the time they want it to last for? I mean do they really need a dual core with DDR2 ram?

So if they get the above mobo, cpu & RAM that leaves £250 for the rest... Although they really want it as cheap as possible........

Sorry for the long ass essay but just wanted to give you as much info as possible.

Cheers in advance, Doug.

Thinking of something like this with the Athlon 64 3400+, Gigabyte board and 1GB Geil RAM:

Your basket

So £225 plus the £50 = £275 overall..... would that PC be good for a while? I only keep up with the top performers lol

Cheers, Doug.

The 3400+ is a good cpu, good call for Antec for case, they're a bargain considering the PSU that's in them.

I'd suggest getting another GB of ram, some of the games that PC can play would certainly benefit from 2GB.

Cheers,

I thought the CPU would be more than good enough until proper multi threaded programs are out and that won't be until multi-core is the norm.

Good to see I got the Antec bit right as well. I heard their PSU's are good and the user said the case will be hiden.

As for the RAM, the mobo only has two slots and both are filled with 512mb sticks. I may suggest that maybe sometime they upgrade to two but I don;t think they will be going vista anytime soon so hopefully 1GB will do until they upgrade.

Any comments on the GFX card anyone? Heard the 1950pro is the best for this sort of price range?

Cheers, Doug.

will easily cope with what they need it for, if anything it might be over the top for what they do, can't say i've played sim2 or portal but the system specs i could find dont seem to indicate it will be stretched.

I was also thinking this. I would only buy the 256mb versionm chose the wrong one when I added to basket.

Would a x1650pro be better than a 7600GT? I have found a x1650pro with Gddr3 memory for £50, how does that compare to the 7600gt? Prices I have found are:

Around £70 for X1950pro
Around £50 for x1650pro with GDDR3
7600GT for £55-£60
HD2400 or HD2600 any good? I haven't even bothered looking at those tho.

I have used a X1650pro without gdd3 and it was okish but was wondering if the gddr3 would help it? If not how much better is 7600GT? If that's not a lot better then I might just persuade them to go with 1950pro.... at least they won't have to upgrade for ages....

Cheers in advance, Doug.

need to get an idea of what they plan to do, you mention they maybe thinking of a mobo/cpu upgrade in a year or so.

if its not likely to get any more graphically orientated then i'd say the x1650pro should be ok.

but to be on the safe side, being as its within budget, and too save yourself any aggro 1950pro would be the best overall bet for the difference in price.
