help with a hacking problem. please

What?

If you have a long, complex password what are the odds of someone guessing that straight away?

Yer exactly - probability wise, it's generally accepted that you will find it after going through half the possible key space - which with a long and complex password should be about equivalent to the age of the universe :) Of course if you pick it out of the hat on your first attempt you're a pretty lucky guy :p all about reducing risk though I guess and making those odds as unrealistic as possible.

So from what the OP has said so far, this is a Windows Server(because the OP said that he'd not played with the Linux boxes)? Probably running IIS FTP(which doesn't support FTPS/SFTP unless it's Server 2008/R2)? Is it controlled through a domain, or is it a stand alone server?

If it is a standalone server using IIS FTP then that's pretty easy to lock down brute force attacks on FTP accounts. You will need to ensure that the builtin Administrative account has its name changed so that your admin account can't be DoS'ed.

fixed admin acount has been deleted and a new one set up with a diff name

theyve got a new fibe connection now so the attempts that still trying to log onto the admin account arnt making any impact on the service
