Running a Core i7 950 at stock getting 39c idle and no higher than 60c at load is that about normal for stock or to higher temp?

Also if the about is ok how would I go about overclocking this chip and what sort of increase could I be looking at?

System is

Asus Sabertooth x58
intel core i7 950
patriot viper 6gb ddr3 pc3-12800c8 1600mhz
coolermaster hyper 212 plus

I'd recommend the use of dual fans for a push/pull setup as those temps sound kinda high for me
43idle/85load under prime95 with 3.8 / 68 under gaming

There are so many variables at work with respect to temps, for example the air flow in your case, the seating of the Cooler on the CPU, the way the TM has been applied and more importantly each CPU is different.

If you are running your ram via a XMP profile then it is possible that the motherboard default voltages have been altered too. These changes could impact on your temps too.

So as you can see there are lots of reasons why temps might be higher than they could be, or even lots of reason why your temps might be spot on.

The other thing is which core is being represented at that temp? By that I mean the CPU is a quad core, and you are presenting only one temp. Now on some quad core CPU's there can be as big as 8'C difference between the highest and lowest temp of each core. Some temp gauges select one core and only use that to represent the temp. It might be the one that is the highest or it might be the one that is the lowest. So not sure how valid your temp that you cited is.

don't let it go over 70 degrees C at full load and you should be fine.

if you want to overclock, it is probably best to buy an aftermarket air cooler.

redone the paste and reseated the heatsink gone from 39c idle to 31c idle is that still too hot?

Much better. What voltage is your cpu running at?
With a 950 you can easily hit 4Ghz depending on the chip, but you have to decide which temperatures you are happy with.
