Going to be leaving work soon and will have to give back my Focus so I'm starting to look around at a replacement.
I'm looking to spend up to £4k, it HAS to be an automatic, as reliable as possible and mpg 30+, not fussy with regard to petrol or diesel.
This is something I will be keeping for a LONG time not replacing after a year. Comfort is a factor (aircon is essential) and it needs to be either an estate or a hard top as I'll need to carry 1-3 bikes (have carriers on the roof atm).
Usage will be mostly around town short stuff, with occasional 100 mile trips to see friends or go biking.
Oh yea, performance is not that important, i currently have an 06 1.6 focus auto and I'm quite happy with that.

I'm quite happy with mpv's as well not just standard cars/estates.

Any pointers you can give will be fantastic :)

Thanks

I don't understand why you are even asking as you know what to get..
Another focus. Simples.

Mondeo would be the other option, newer and better spec for same price :p

Yep has to be an auto as I've only got one leg.
I do like the focus, but reading through some other threads it seems to be to steer away from ford auto's unless they are relatively new (06 onwards)
I was debating a volvo, I looked at them a few years ago and do rather like them but not sure how the mpg would go as they all seem a little thirsty?
I'm not bothered about age so 4k 04/05 for a cheaper car or 4k for a 98/99 better built car I'm easy, just have no real idea of whats good.

I'd also be interested in this topic, as my grandad wants to trade in his W reg Xsara Picasso + £6000 for a '05 1.6 auto Toyota Corolla, which to me doesn't sound like a great deal, but then I don't know much about Corollas.

I think he should spend less money, so my spec is pretty much the same as OP, maybe OP wants a Corolla? :p

A late '90s early '00s Jaguar XJ8 would do it to, bit more expensive to look after than the other suggestions, but solid when looked after properly and very comfortable, and very good for covering long distances effortlessly. You get a choice of either a 3.2 V8 or a 4.0 V8 with this car. Both good, but the 4.0 is faster and no less economical, will cost a bit more to buy though of course. On a good run you will see high 20s, maybe 30mpg. You wont get anywhere near that around town though :p

Oh I now read it'll be mostly used around town, I had it in my head you wanted it mostly for long distance work, in that case, ignore this. You couldn't buy a much more daft car for around town use really :D

but you have been driving one and you are perfectly happy with it, so buy another.

focus autos post mk1 facelift are fine.

I drove a MK2 Focus with an auto box and lets just say I was not all that impressed.

It worked, but I would not want to live with it.

we are talking small town journeys mostly. i cannot see a single reason why a focus would not be a problem.
its not meant to be a race car or a GT, so it wont be good at those things.

I did not evaluate it on those points, like I said - It worked but I would not be able to live with it, most of my driving was around town.

I did not like it, others might /shrug
