Hey,

Can anyone offer any suggestions on the in laws scenic Dci? When cold it completely lacks all power and will not rev above 2500rpm. Leave the car to idle for five or so minutes and power is restored and it'll run fine for the rest of your trip.

I assume its going in to some sort of limp mode from cold because of the rev limit and the fact it has no power. Any suggestions as to why it goes away after five minutes and gives full power / throttle response would be much appreciated :)

Hmm that is strange.

I've got a Megane with the 1.9 dci and it does not limit me, I can rev the car as much as I want, although I don't take it over 2100rpm until the engine is warm, or I'm going up a steep hill.

He doesn't normally rev it up at all when cold, but when you start it, its lethargic and even if you put your foot to the floor it will not pass 2500 rpm, which is why I figured it must be some kind of limp / fail safe. Its just odd that it runs normally when its had a few minutes of idle time.

Since its been doing this, it doesn't want to go up the hill outside his house so he sits there and waits for the throttle response to be good before setting off.

EGR can cause this on the 1.9's, see if its gunked up.

Depending on age, EGR is a common issue.

Be very careful trying to clean it out however, It is possible to dislodge the muck such that it can get onto the faces of the inlet valves. If this happens you will not be able to get compression to start the engine.

There are ways round this that do not require dismantling of the engine but it can be a bit of a ballache.

Thanks for this suggestion chaps, but the EGR valve is new. It was replaced by the garage as a possible cure for the symptoms. It hasn't cured it :(

any codes?

Not that I know of, I asked him and he couldn't remember. I figured that my generic scanner would be useless on the Renault as it is an 02 model which (could be wrong here) I believe it doesn't conform to standard obd stuff?

Renault forums suggest either MAF or the existence of a software update at Renault to fix this. I'm not sure how likely either is but he's going to take it to a different garage next week.

ISTR having a traffic van (Same engine) with this sort of problem some years ago that did turn out to be a MAF issue. Unfortunately it was difficult to "test" because of the difficulties of it being intermittent and being able to catch it in the act.

Eventually I bit the bullet, got a new one, and solved it.

Are you in a position of being able to "borrow" one?

There is another Renault in the family ( :( ) but its a modus with the little baby dci so I doubt it'd be correct for the scenic? I wondered if it would be worth trying some MAF cleaner?

Did you get to the bottom of this issue? I'm having the exact same problem with my espace
