Help with AMD 8350 Temps IDLE

I loved the 8 core fx chips when they came out and at one point had 8 of them running in PCs at my house (benchmarking, lan gaming and running number crunching software for work). I don't have any set up at the moment since I no longer use the program they were used for but i do remember choosing a motherboard could be a minefield. Just because they are compatible, doesn't mean they should be used together.

I had a few Formula-z with watercooling on VRM/NB which were stunning boards but for their price i could have gone with a better set up if my software played nice with x79.

I think returning the motherboard is out of the question. I still haven't got the cooler yet, though. Can you guys recommend a good cooler for it? Preferably somewhere under £50, even more preferably under £30. Hopefully one that isn't loud?

Any particular reason why the return is out of the question? OCuk are very good with returns and you would be better off getting a cheaper half decent cooler with a reliable board over a pimp cooler and hoping the air it creates helps the VRMs, as they aren't really designed with cooling surrounding components as a primary objective.

I sent out a motherboard years ago with insured delivery at £12 i believe.

What case do you have? The case determines the size of the cooler and can also share the fault of high temperatures.

The stock cooler on the FX 8 cores is actually fairly substantial for a stock heat sink (4 heat pipes iirc). It also (as previously mentioned) has the major advantage of blowing air over the VRM heat sink.

Just put a decent fan on it, the stock one is rubbish.

I believe that case is okay up to 160mm of cooler height. Have a look in the overclocking and cooling forum section, there is a benchmark thread there with most coolers being in your budget.

Tell your mum that the chances of fire are higher with this MOBO. If she says no, then its time to get the matches out.

Honestly, if you are only looking to run it at 4ghz, and arent happy replacing the fan on the stock cooler, just use the 212 evo. Its a great cooler for the money, especially if you have already bought it.

The VRM issue might be a problem further down the line when multi-threaded games become more prevalent, but honestly unless you are running benchmarks the 750ti will run out of grunt before the CPU gets the motherboard hot enough to throttle.

I managed to fit the cooler in, but now I believe my PSU has blown up.

I was playing Dirt 3 on it for a good 15 minutes at under 60 C and then I heard a loud bang with a brown flash of light. I believe it is my PSU, and I pray to god it is just my PSU. If my mobo, gpu or cpu has blown I think I am just gonna shrivel down and cry.

Advice?

Most likely the PSU, but if you have been unlucky it can take other things with it.

Have you tried turning it on again since?

I remember my adventures with PCs when I was 13, unfortunately pre-internet so difficult to find fixes. Managed to mess up my config.sys one Christmas, should have been playing C&C but had to play Dune 2 as CDRom drive wasn't loaded :D

Any burning smell? Make sure you check the fuse in the plug on the power cable.

All part of the joys of learning about building PCs!

Sorry for the situation but you were kinda pushing it with the psu config as you admitted it was of poor quality and the current draw of an fx8 using 4 pin atx isn't really safe either.
With a bit of luck you just need a new psu and you'll be ok.
