Hey all,

I've had this problem for a good while now and it's getting to the point where it kind of drives you crazy lol. Whenever my pc is running I can hear a quiet but constant humming type noise (not unlike a warpcore from Star Trek).

Just for info I have a HAF 932 case which I think may be causing the problem.

I've checked all the fans, they're all working fine and when I've disconnected them all one by one the noise remains (plus with them all off). I have a no maintenance closed watercooler for my CPU (Antec) which I've also disconnected, yet the noise remains. I've pulled the Hard Drive's out of the tool-less bays and the noise remains...I've prodded around the motherboard, PSU and no matter what I do the noise remains the same, not even an alteration like you would expect if you prodded the part where the noise was coming from where I imagine the pitch or frequency of the humming would alter.

I've recently purchased silicone washers and put them on all the screws I possibly could that hold components together and installed silicone anti-vibration kits on the fans that I could get to fit (so on all the 120mm's). At the point now where I need help! lol. It's inaudible during gaming sessions, watching movies or listening to music but as soon as there is little to no sound it can be heard clearly...so if I'm on the computer reading or doing some work in MS Word, Excel etc..there it is, in the background like a dull droning noise!

So I'm at a loss for what it could be...

Anyone else experienced such issues in the past?

Thanks all! :D

Tried that, isn't the HDD's...sounds near the PSU if anything but unless it's coming from within the PSU itself I couldn't say...

best way to do it, shut down your PC unplug any chasis fans, stop your GPU CPU and PSU fans from spinning (will be ok) start them one by one, untill you hear the humming sound, also if you can try and get into the bios to do this and not windows.

Sorry for the delayed reply been busy at work.

It's not a whining noise it's a humming type noise...quite strange.

I'll give it a go with the PSU and GPU fans though, the GPU is a Powercolor 7970 with their "special" fan system, think it's called the Vortex III

Just unplug fans until it stops, or stop fans with your finger - for the PSU with the machine off block the blades with a stick or something then power on. More often than not it's PSUs that are loud though but there are plenty of silent ones these days :)

have you tried pushing on the hard drive with your finger? This can help see if its vibrations causing it.

You could try lifting the case off the desk by 1cm or so while its switched on to see if the noise changes, also putting your ear against your desk to see if the same noise is louder there.

It sounds to me like the noise is the side panels or part of the case vibrating causing the hum (had the same problem in the past)
When you turn on your pc take off the side panels, if it still persists hold firmly parts of the case to isolate where it is coming from and either remove, loosen/tighten screws or add some form of vibration absorption material. if you are using mechanical hdd(s) instead of using the supplied hdd caddies use elastic to suspend them.
hope this helps

I have this issue from my HDD's causing my case to slightly vibrate from time to time. Can be very annoying, try applying pressure on the HDD and it might sort the problem.

What kind of surface is your PC resting on & does it change if you rest it on a different surface? I had to make some little foam pads for the feet of my PC due to an irritating case related noise..

If he stops all his fans it can only be a few things, PSU whine, HDD, nothing else that comes to my mind that would cause it.

You can download a program called HDD Scan, change the Automatic Acoustic Management levels.

Firmly poke parts of the computer while it's running (like the exterior of the case, HDDs etc). If it's vibration related the sound will stop when you are pressing against the offending part.
