Help with Backup/storage solution! should i go Raid5??

i currently have

2x250gb 3.5 sata 1x wd2500aaks + 1x sp2504c
2x60gb 2.5 sata 1 1xmomentus 5400.2
1x80gb ide 1x mpo804h external photo backup
1x250gb 2.5 sata in esata usb exteranal with cady in pc
1x320gb external


Hi i am looking at upgrading my storage sollution currently i use my pc to share music videos photos ect with my laptops and ps3. and use it for photo/video editing

i am doing this because i have just had 2 external drives fail with my back ups on, i have returned both and have recieved a full refund.
and one wd 2500ak which i should recieve my rma tomorrow of wd2500aaks

i now have £120 to spend. or maybe more if i sell some of my current disks

Pc intel core2duo [email protected], 6gb ddr2 pc6400,nvidia 7800gtx, gigabyte 965p DS4
100gb+ music
100gb dslr photos
50gb HD 1080p home movies
250gb tv/movies
50gb apps
so split between the above drives and laptop(320gb) and ps3(250gb)

i have 2xsata raid 0/1
and 6xsata raid 0/1/5/10

not sure if i should sell everything and start from scratch!

I am at present trialing windows home server but i would still like to use pc for video/photo editing so was going to put windows 7 back on when i got my new hdds. but still unsure as my laptop should be ok for editing
(xps m1530
t8100 3M Cache, 2.10 GHz, 800 MHz FSB
4gb ram
320gb hd
8600gt
1280x800 wxvga trulife

i would also like to use my pc to back up my laptop aswell

would this be best raid 0 my 2 x 250gb for os and apps?
would this not be too big 500gb?
as atm my c drive is at 88gb with os,programs, some data eg downloads documents music video what else would/should i store there

or sell them and get two 500gb f3's raid0 but 1tb would be overkill surely for os ect

AND

(2x 500gb + 1 1tb) (f3's 2x 1tb) ( f3s or 2 x 1.5tb f2s) (1 for network storage/ steaming( videos music pics) + 1 for weekly backup to be kept in fire/waterproof safe) would partitioning them have any effect on speed?

would this be addequate or anyone sujest different??

got a max of £200 to spend btw

or could build a cheap home server as already have spare case, psu, hds

very very confused
 
I'd try to keep it simple by firstly listing your objectives with moving all this about. What do you want as an end result? I like to keep things simple so I do:

OS = 160gb drive
Games = 160gb drive
Data = 2 x 500gb drive in RAID 1 (mirror)
Backup = 1TB drive

However, this will soon change as I'm running out of space.
 
Oh and RAID1 or 5; remember you will still need to backup your data to an external to be safe. RAID is a way to get back up and running quickly with minimal fuss, but it is not a real backup solution being in the same computer. All the drives could go pop during a power surge for example.
 
ok i THINK my objectives are in order of preference
1. media sharing/file server between Laptop, ps3, Phone (hd2)
2. Photo and Video Editing
3. Printing
4.Backup
5. downloading(can be started on laptop but would like to dowload to server) i can do this with whs
6. surfing(mainly done on Laptop)

Thanks so im thinking 2x 500gb raid0 with a 1tb backup £130? or 3x 500gb raid0 and 1.5tb back up £170 or 2x 1tb + 1x 1.5tb( backup £190)

right just purchased

2x f3 1tbfor raid 0
and
2x1.5tb f2s for 1 for internal back up and one for external usb/hotswop

Can some one suggest what would be the best utilisation for the above drives for os/programs/data/music/videos/backup/video and photo editing

Im sure someone here can advise !!

just trying out my 2x250gb in raid0 with os on first partition and get 140 MB/s

new drives will be here tomorrow!!
