Help with CPU cooler please!?

Hi there

I need some advice/recommendations on a CPU cooler to use on my new build please??

Will be cooling a 4790K on a Gigabyte Z97X-SOC Force..

On my last build I used a TRUE Spirit 140 Power and without double checking, I thought it would be fine on this build.

The heatsink massively overhangs the first PCIe slot (the only 16x on the board) so much so I wouldn't be able to install the GPU in it.

Wanted something that could cool as effectively (and quietly) as the Thermalright and not overhang the first PCIe slot.

I've already tried the fit and the heatsink definitely overhangs the slot..

Wondering whether to just use the bottom slot (8x) but I'm not sure there'd be any performance hit from doing so.
Ideally I want to use the 16x slot though..

Its a Fractal Design R4..

Thought about going AIO but think I'd have some issues with mounting top rad

Use the 2nd orange PCI-E slot.

That runs at 8X.

Nope - left it blanked off
Wondering if I could use an AIO (quietly) in this case, I'm unlikely to be overclocking if it makes any difference

Looking into this closer even the Noctua's I've looked at (according to Noctua themselves) will overhang the first PCIe slot..

Guess I'll run my 970 on the 8x slot for now.. If I wanted to go SLI I'd still want to free up that first slot..

Any other ideas?

Have you tried turning the cooler through 90°? I have to mount mine in a horizontal plane otherwise it hits the gpu.

Pretty sure you can't with this heatsink due to the mounting mechanism..
This wouldn't be an issue with a NH-U14S for example as the mounting plate orientation can be picked depending which way you want it..

Out of interest, with your horizontal mounting are you blowing air up or down?

I can turn my truespirit 140bw either way, although obviously with it vertical it hits the gpu

I have the fan on the top pulling air upwards, which then gets pulled into the psu and exhausted out the back, I have a far from conventional case arrangement though!

Due to no space I cut up an old atx case and wall mounted my pc

I leave the side off as with only a single 140mm fan and a gtx660 (that's my old 260 shown) it's far from noisy. I did however find that I got significantly cooler temperatures with it sucking upwards than blowing downwards.

edit2: Just noticed that you have a truespirit 140 power, not sure if the mounting should be any different though; fwiw mine didn't look like it would fit both ways but it does - just unscrew the retention plate from the standoff pillars and rotate it.

Either way you shouldn't have any issues mounting it horizontally, if anything it will work better especially if you have top mounted exhaust fans.

Cooling wise my i5 750 @ 4.2Ghz idles at around 34°C and peaks at around 76°C full load with 20°C ambient.

Thermalright has a new TRUE Spirit 140 BW Rev.A with the base offset for better CPU clearance .. it is still 155mm wide but is 69mm from center CPU toward PCIe socket. Also the new Macho Rev.B / Macho Zero cool as well as TRUE Spirit 140 and are 140mm wide / 70mm from center of CPU toward PCIe socket.

The Silver Arrow IB-E (68mm) and Archon IB-E (70mm) also have offset bases.
