Hi, i recently build my first system and have ad a bash at overclocking my cpu and gfx but now i want to try and understand memory and how to modify the settings for optimal performance, i mainly use my system for gaming if that makes a difference and the rest of the system spec is in my sig if needed.

Here is a screenshot of cpu-z and amd overdrive showing current stock memory settings amongst other things, just wanted info on where to start, what to aim for and peoples experience with this brand. Cheers, Dane

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a bar that said Overclock and all you'd have to do is adjust the figure or move the little pointer left or right to increase or decrease power. Why do they have to make things so hard for nothing?

they do have auto clock tools built in for the cpu and gpu but i want to learn about it and understand what im doing. if it goes **** up i want to know why.

danewesley, it seems you are UnderClocking your Memory . . .

Below left is how it is now (DDR3-1333 Cas 9) and on the right is how it could be (DDR3-1600 Cas 8) . . .

amdddr3.jpg

  1. DDR3-1333 CAS 9 13.5 ns (128-bit) 10,664 MB/s
  2. DDR3-1600 CAS 8 10.0 ns (128-bit) 12,800 MB/s

Well you will be looking for a setting in the BIOS that is memory related, could be on [Auto] at the moment or [DDR3-1333] and you would need to change it to [DDR3-1600] . . .

The name and location of this option may be different according to which motherboard you are using, I'm not familar with the GigaByte Bios schema so you will need to wait for another user to guide you or read the manual! :p

Ok so i changed to manual and made DDR3-1600 and it changed the timings to the ones pictures, now i can change the timings in the bios but i was wondering, what about the voltage? do i have to bmp it up to 1.6, i riginally changed manually and didnt edit voltage and my system froze.

when i restart and press delete to go to bios, my keyboard doesnt work most of the time, im assuming its because im using a mac keyboard?

danewesley, yeah set the voltage to 1.6vDimm for DDR3-1600! :)

I'm not sure what your doing with the timings though? . . . should be 8-8-8-24 @ DDR3-1600 but you set 11-11-11-29 . . .

  • Lower timings are preferable to higher timings (Lower timings = lower Latency)
  • Higher frequency is preferable to lower frequency (Higher frequency = increased Bandwidth)
In theory one is trying to find a good balance between achieving lower latency while at the same time maximizing Bandwidth

when i changed the setting to 1600 in bios it automatically changed the timings to the ones above, i will go into the bios and change them now and try change the voltage too.
