Right I'm stuck, so are my mates, with what's going wrong with my rig. Posted originially in the graphics card section ( http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18147709 ) but reposting here as the card has been given the OK by OcUK testing.
I started getting graphics corruptions:

during play, leading to the system locking up then rebooting itself. Then this would frequently appear:

I RMA'd the card and it said all was ok, tested on an asus and gigabyte board, under all the extreme 3D load testing etc etc. I have just finished testing the memory (memtest 86) and again no fault found there. Without wanting to splash out on separate components and eliminating factors, any suggestions as to what the cause is?
Weird thing is that the pixels will appear after a few seconds of playing modern warfare 2 or warhammer, but if I manually put the fan speed to 40-60% they both play a lot more stable. I coudl play Warhammer for hours before the pixels appeared (sometimes they dont too) and MW2 lasted about 15 minutes (at 40% speed). One thing I have noticed is that I don't hear the fan whizz to high speeds when I play MW2 when it's on auto fanspeed mode, which it definitely used to do..

Playing Warhammer this morning, frequently alt-tabbing to the ATI thing and it showed the temp never goign above 40C when the fan is at 50%, activity hitting 50%ish in zerg warfare.

Thoughts on what the underlying prob is? I still think it points to the card somehow. My setup consists of:
XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Kingston HyperX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel (KHX8500D2K2/4G) x2, total 8gb
Gigabyte GA-X48-DS5 Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700w Silent SLI Certified Modular Power Supply
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.83GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - Retail

Running fine for ten months doing anything, these problems started last week.

:(

Same thing happened to my 8800GTX was the GPU's memory that was the problem. It Started off it only appeared after a few minutes-hours of game play.
Within a few days it happened the second i switched the pc on. Does this only happen when your in 3d mode ??

Yea Spils only when I'm runnign games, auto fanspeed ind esktop and web browsing and other apps etc it's fine at 27% as it stays at. If I don't adjust the fanspeed and run a game it will only last a manner of minutes before the symptoms begin.
Still smells like the graphics card but the RMA report was all good

Sounds the same problem as I had to be fair which like I say was down the memory chips on the gpu, my graphics temps was all fine as its not the core of pcb that's getting hot its the ram chips.
Within a week it was that bad i just brought a new card problem went right away.

Someone else may have better or different info for you but every time I've saw that issue its been down to bad ram on the graphics card.
Id say bad card.

This seems the problem with my 5770 which I will RMA next week. I'm fine when my pc's 'idle' whoch is most of the time, until gaming, then its like a bombs gone off :)

Windows 7 Hp 64bit, and anything like Sims3, DoW II, GTA IV....

Its known as the brown screen of death :(

i already RMAd my card, apparently it;s fine, but been playign warhammer constantly all day with setting the fan speed to 50% no problems whatsoever. am puzzled :(

So the card seemed to die one morning, after a 12 hour overnight cooldown after a classic corruption, didnt get a sniff of anythign on the monitor so RMAd it once more. Result! It's been returned to the manufacturer for replacement/repair as this time round corruptions were noted by the tester. Ok so it's not good to have a faulty product but at least I can be assured the other parts of my rig are fine.

Now just gotta wait "up to 28 days" (booooo) for a replacement!

Hehe, joking aside these RMAs have coincided nicely with having to cane out some coursework every wakign hour of my day, two deadlines approaching and no gaming for a couple weeks, every cloud and all that. You'd think at 28 I woudl learn to prioritise and have effective time management....
