Hi guy, decided to update my old 120gd ide hd to a nice new 320 hitachi one as they are on offer this week, the problem is that my computer decects it in the bios and can be seen in the device management but not through my computer??? im a bit of a novice these days so i know its probably a schoolboy error!! cheers

You'll need to create and format a partition on the new drive using Disk Management before it can be accessed. Right click on My Computer and pick Manage, then pick Disk Management from the left hand tree list. The two drives (plus any opticals etc you have) will be displayed in the right hand pane. Once you've written the initial signature to the new drive it will appear as a bar of unallocated space, right click in there and pick New Partition, check the values are sensible in the pop up and check the Quick Format box. Once you hit OK it'll tak a minute or so to sort itself out but that should be it done. If you want you can swap the drive letters about so that the HDDs are C & D and any opticals start at E but that's personal preference.

cheers fella, do you know of an easy way to copy all the data from my old ide drive to my new sata one then use that as the master as everythings working sweet?

You'd need to image from one drive to another. Acronis True Image Home would do it. Get the 30 day trial which is fully functioning and use 'clone disk' - I actually ended up buying it because I liked it so much, but that's up to you.

Hi guys, resurecting this thread as im having the same problem again. For some reason my cpu decided to go back to its defult speed, i changed it back to what i clocked it to and for some reason the slave hitachi hd has decided to go missing, i can see it in the device manager but nowhere else?? Also i carnt format it as it has loads of important data on it now. thanks for any help fellas

If you go in to control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> disk management, what does the status of the drive say? (I.e healthy).

it says dynamic and offline. I try to reactivate the disk by right clicking and it comes up with the error --" the operation did not complete, check the System Event Log for mor info on the error". cheers fella

If you go in to event viewer (in administrative tools) and under system do you have any red crosses (or warnings) regarding the hard drive? (Should say Disk under "source" I think).

hi , it comes up with 2 errors the source is LDM on both. Under description on the first one it says:

Disk group E02431jebxym6Dg0: Errors in some confiruration copier: Disk Harddisk0,copy1:Block1: Invalid magic number in the configuration copy.

The second error says:

Internal Error: The disk group contains no valid confiruration copies (C10000b6)

cheers
Matt

Are you using windows XP home edition? I just found this on MS support website:

Dynamic disks are not supported on portable computers or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.

I hear this is a problem with your power cables. You see data is made of 1's and 0's. The 1's are pretty thin and have no problem getting through, the 0's are thicker and sometimes cause bugs like the one you're experiencing.

A good way to get rid of these stuck 0's in your cables is to stretch them with a good weight. People have reported great results by making a large circle of the cable, tying one end to something high and use your own weigth to stretch the cables by the neck inside formentioned circle.
