Okay guys this is my brothers laptop. One day it just wouldn't turn on.

Hit power and the lights come on. Screen shows no signs of life, no image, no backlight.

Capslock LED flashes.
Numlock LED flashes.

The flashes don't correspond to any of the error codes on the HP site, it will stay like this until the power button is held down for 4 seconds.

It is not a power jack or battery issue.
It is not a ram issue.
It is not a HDD issue.
I have stripped the laptop down to nothing and reassembled it, including removing the bios bat for 15 mins and re-seating the CPU.

I cannot find what this error code with the lights refers to any ideas? the flashes are about one every second or so and continuous.

Right utterly amazed as I'm typing this the screen is coming up with a checksum error (first time anything has been displayed on the screen in months) it seems to be freezing here now, will just check the KB connector to the mobo incase it inst registering the F keys. Would like some input anyway incase any of you know anything :D

Yeah it is am AMD effort. I have actually got it to boot into windows a few times since posting, but its very hit or miss. Not 100% on the CPU model at the moment, you wouldnt happen to know if the bios accepts upgrades or alternatives would you?

It seems to be a dv6z 1100

I'm not actually sure, I should have made a note when I stripped it down. I have searched online including HPs site and the specifics are not available, it seems it is probably a CTO (custom to order) model, He saved himself some cash by ordering it from America. It's full model number is DV6z 1100 (as I say only comes up as custom to order with HP with no detailed specs) I have found a review of the DV6z with specs but I'm not sure how these compare with the 1100 model. They are..

I actually think it is the mobo though, I usually find that when we are in the realm of intermittent, it's the mobo. My history with CPUs is they either work or they don't. I'm half considering baking it as you could a GFX card but I'm not sure how all the plastics would like that (CPU/RAM sockets etc.)

I'm currently looking at a 2116ea on the bay with a smashed screen that looks to be a similar spec and I'm wondering if I can just swap the screens/HDD/RAM over etc seller wants £185 and £20 postage but is open to offers and if he will take £80-100 for it, that would probably be worth going for, do you think? that unit has a 2.5ghz CPU which is probably an upgrade also.

Cheers for the help btw :)
