First of all I apologize if this has been answered before but I can't seem to find an answer to my (probably simple) question.

Ordered a 256GB SSD, currently run windows off a 1TB hard drive. Would prefer not to re install windows, so this means cloning. I have read the cloning guide in this sub forum, but what I don't understand is that I have 900GB of data on my main hard drive and therefor I obviously can't clone this all to an SSD. The only way I can think of getting around this is by transferring most of my films, music, images and games over to my 1TB external HDD so my C drive is small enough to clone, and then sort everything back out once windows is cloned to my SSD?

Is there an easier way of doing this?

yes but you have to pay for the software

paragon os migrate will do it

if you can whittle everything down to fit on the ssd then do that, most games will need re installing after you've formatted the hdd,but aslong as you can clone windows to the ssd
you can then make folders on the hdd for music/films/games ect

I'm willing to pay for paragon providing it will simply clone my windows files?

Do I have to format my original HDD after I've installed windows onto the SSD?

if you have the time though its not hard to do clean install on the new ssd then use your external drive to backup whats needed off the 1tb hdd/wipe it then re install your games/films/music ect that's what I do

Yeah it's looking like a much easier option than I first thought. Is it just a simple case of dragging programs and media to the external drive and then visa versa?
