Help with iPad backup please

I recently backed up my iPad using iTunes. However, there was a very important PDF file one there that has gone missing. I have searched the backup folder, but it is just a long list of files with no real meaning.

Have I lost my PDF for good, or is it hiding somewhere in the backup folder? If so, how can I restore it?

It may be hiding in there depending on where you put it. There are a few tools that will let you look into the backups, Iphone backup extractor is one of them, The free version lets you extract 2 files at a time.

Is it under the Books bit in iTunes or your iTunes Media folder? The backup folder is indeed gibberish as they are files only iTunes can use to restore back to an iOS device. Backing up an iOS device shouldn't really lose any data from it, but if it's disappeared then there's a chance it may have simply synced to your computer so fingers crossed it's there!
