help with LAMP mainly MySQL

going through this tutorial http://www.susegeek.com/internet-browser/install-configure-lamp-apachemysqlphp-in-opensuse-110/
and get stuck at this bit

opensuse11:~ # mysqladmin -u root -p rootpassword

now i type in mysqladmin -u root -p mypassword it then says enter password:
so i do and then i get a

mysqladmin: connection to server at 'localhost' failed
error: ' Access denied for user 'root@localhost' (using password:YES)'

what am i doing wrong
