My sister has recently broke her laptop and when she took it to PC World they said the ribbon going into the display was damaged and wanted to charge £200 before they even attempted to sort it out.

So my question is how is easy would it be to change it myself?, as that sounded damn expensive to me. I have built a pc myself so i have a reasonable amount of knowledge, i assume a laptop is pretty similar. Also are new ribbons easy / cheap to get?

Ribbons are normally part of the LCD, hence the stupid price. LCD screens can be anything from 80quid to 200quid, depending on the size and resolution. If you've ever taken a laptop apart you'll be fine at replacing it. Just make sure you take your time and look for any hidden screws/removable bezels.

The ribbons are normally fairly cheap, can be very fiddly to connect though and laptops take a delicate balance of being gentle and forcing them apart,

What are the symptoms?
