I am going to be deciding over the d40x and the 400d with the kit lens (18-55mm) now i want to have a little reach as well as i am off to Kenya in january/febuary time.

I will be doing a few safaris and staying along the coast. There is an offer at the moment with a tamron 55-200mm f4-5.6. being a newbie with lenses i dont know if this lens is any good or should i skip the offer and choose another lens that might suit me more.

I have a limit of £250 for a lens if not going for the bundled offer - Please Help.

Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G AF-S VR IF

That's meant to be a good lens, though you'd need to stretch to closer to £330 for that probably.

Can't get it just yet... probably around the same time as the 40D appears. Certainly in time for your trip.

just been reading it should be released in october for £239, not sure what its going to be like.

Check out GT junkies for sale thread, he's selling a sigma 170-500mm lens close to your budget, it's canon fit but a great price :)

CANON EF 70-300MM IS USM, might not find it for less than 300 though, unless you go for some second hand one off a market site.

Thought it was only 100 posts you needed for MM?

Access to the Members Market forum requires two things. Firstly, you will need to have over 250 posts and have been signed up for at least 90 days. Please note that this does not mean you spam the forums simply to increase your posts, as this action will result in posts being deducted, and if you continue this behaviour, your account will eventually be banned/suspended. Once you reach 250 posts, you will need to activate your trust. This is either found in your UserCP, or you can press the trust button that appears at the bottom of all your posts.

Been that way for a long time now.

Hi I am a DSLR n00bie too, I bought the EOS 400D and an extra EF 75-300 USM 3 lens the lens itself was £150 I think I got it from jacobs DO NOT buy the one without the USM motor as it is extremely slow Sigma have a good lens but it is not as fast as the canon lens and you will notice the difference
I was going to show some pics I will try put them onto a host sight

ok some pics doesn't really show off the zoom but you get and idea ish

so many lenses to choose from.

I would love gt junkies lens but dont have the cash asap to cough up. hens why i have been looking around for a good lens rather than the bundled lens originally.

I have had a look around on the net and the 300mm might be on the short side. General recommendations are for 400mm+

are the extension rings that give 2x any good? would a 300mm plus this be a wise investment rather than getting a decent 400mm+ lens?

Teleconverters generally only work well on expensive lenses. In addition to this getting a 400mm lens will be expensive in the first place. Your best bet would to just go for on of the 70-300mm lenses.

Point taken about the teleconverters - tbh i know my budget will only surfice for (300 brand new) im a bit sceptical on buying 2nd hand as i dont know what to look out for or what questions to ask!

A 70-300mm is a good choice at your budget. Forget the entry level Tamron and Sigma offerings, at the very least, go for the Sigma 70-300mm APO. The Nikon VR model has had great reviews as well....not sure about Canon :)

If you could squeeze the cash, a Sigma 170-500mm, or the Tamron 200-500mm would give you a better reach for safari. So how about a second-hand DSLR (bargains-galore on the 350D and the D70!), and a big bit of glass? ;)

The only reason i can get the d40x or 400d is that i have been given a wad of insurance voutchers for a high street store for my camera that got nicked on monday. All be it i raised the value of the camera a tad ;)
