help with lenses

I am going to be deciding over the d40x and the 400d with the kit lens (18-55mm) now i want to have a little reach as well as i am off to Kenya in january/febuary time.
Hi 33L,

Teleconvertors don't work amazingly well from what i've heard.

As others have said, something longer like 500mm would be ideal for proper reach here. Plus they can be fairly compact. My 170-500 is easy to handhold and shoot with.

Feel free to get in touch using my trust as i have one in the MM at the moment - sure we could sort something out if your budget doesn't stretch! ;)

I'd vote longer rather than using a convertor.

I really dont want to go withthe converters as everyone says they are not worth it especially as you said that a 170-500mm can be hand second for a reasonable price - i will let you know soon about your lens! Im not on the net all the time as just moved house but please can you let me know what you have in mind - my email is in my trust!

I think i have decided upon the canon 70-300 IS USM EF. How good is the IS in the lenses - i.e. is it usually worth the extra or can i get away without it.

Gt Junkie i wish i could have taken you up on the offer but i cant afford it right now.

The 70-300 USM and 70-300 IS USM are very different lenses. It's not just the addition of IS. Go for the IS version, it's without a doubt worth the extra over the 70-300 USM.

This is shot with a Tamron 70-300 @ 300mm, but through glass.
The leopard was on a platform, about 25 feet above the ground.
An awkward shot, since i had to rest the lens hood on the glass and use my left hand to cup over the end to block the unwanted light. Didnt help that the tamron rotates the end of the lens when focusing.

1/100 @ f/6. iso 320 (dull day)

that was a dull day! Nice pic though! I know what you mean about the focus ring rotating as it plays havoc on my kit lens and messing up the polarising filter! How far were you away from the leopard when you took that?

Mixed overcast/raining/sunshine. Had just been trying to rain by the time we got to the leopards enclosure. Hence the ISO being upped from 100 to 320

Think we were a good 40 or so feet from them. Its deceptive due to the field of view from the lens. Good job they werent both on the rear platform. That was a good 30 ft up, but hidden by a lot of foliage.
